Answer:

Introduction

I will say about the professional values that according to me are the most important in nursing. The professional values are the ethical issues which the nurses are required to follow in their practice. In this context, I will highlight upon the usefulness and the other outcomes of the ‘consent’ value in nursing. The Royal college of Nursing, The Nursing and midwifery council, the Nice Guideline and the department of health say about the valid consent that should be taken freely and voluntarily before the patient accepts any kind of treatment. I will be using the Driscoll 2007 model to reflect on the topic that will give the clear view of the topic by answering the triggered questions in the model. The person on which I will be describing will be kept confidential as per the NMC and the data of protection.

What

I can address this question and can at the same time highlight on the professional value of the consent by bringing a scenario of my nursing practice. As a nurse, I should obtain a witnessing and consent letter from the patient X who will be receiving a nursing treatment for bipolar disorder. The goal of the consent is to assure patient anatomy. This will give the consent on the risks and benefits of any treatment that is to be done on X. This is the legal documentation of accepting the consequences that can happen after the surgery. This is to get the consent of the patient about the ethical practice and the quality.

So what

The professional value of the consent will give the complete information on the health problems and the treatments. The informed consent will be giving the notice of the acceptable care that is being given to. As a nurse, I must make my patient X understand all the risks and the treatment procedures so that the person can accept it and give signature of consent (Griffith and Tengnah 2017).

We do it so as to make people accept the consequences that can happen due to the treatment that will be taking place. So that at the end, the doctors, nurses and the staffs are not put into any blame of the harm. This is the legal documentation that will state of the patient will accept the effects. The terms and conditions will be clearly mentioned in the consent paper. I will make sure to explain well all the conditions and the effects to the person X who will be receiving the care (Grace 2017). I will let them know about the clinical trials, that is going to be implicated for good treatment. This is extremely important here because the person can face vulnerable states of mind. I must make sure that this customary practice that will proof of the patient consent on the perceived incompetence due to side effects (Chang et al 2015). This ethical law gives right to the patient to refuse any treatment given. The consent is the most critical issue in treatment that is the right of self determination in treatment. I think that the nurses are the ones that can make people make agree on the consent. We do it by making people understand the positive outcomes of the treatment and make them accept the issues.

However this value is not free from the questionnaire. There in the above case which I mentioned was a 15 year old child and her mother was unwilling to accept the treatment after her child was locked in the pysch unit. She was terrified to sign the treatment consent. In that case the treatments were getting delay. In that case the situation gets really tough for the nurses to handle. As a nurse I should try to make her understand about the child’s health and give her assurance of the loyalty in the treatments. This is the nurse sole duty to perform this professional value and come to frontline in handling the cases which is submerged with many ethical issues. I have seen that sometimes the supervisors can be harsh in handling this case where the patient can get more reluctant to do so. I think the nurses should be very careful and compassionate while making the mother understand. She must understand her mental conditions and try to soothe it and then give the fruitful advice on the treatment that her child will be receiving. I can also find that there may be many questions arising due to the lengthy information given in the consent form and people often say about the important information being buried. Thus in that case the quality assurance board the health care organisation should be very clear about giving the informed consent statement. I believe that this should be the work of collaborations between the nurse, physician and the patient. However, the nurses are going to be the best teacher who will make the patient’s mother understand the situation. I should enforce positive outcome of the care and influence her to sign the consent. I can also adopt the teach-back method in order make sure that she had understood the points. However, I as a nurse cannot pressure her to do so. I can say that this critical issue on the treatment plan where the sentiments of motherly feelings are present, the consent here can only be obtained in calm and quiet setting.

The critical questions may come in interventions plan of consent of any treatment. This should be addressed carefully and strategically. I think the nurse must be expert enough to manage the troubles that can come on making the person understand about the treatment alternatives. I think they should be truthful with the reasonable fatal outcomes that may come and also make them understand the percentage of the chance of such an occurrence.

Now what

Consent is defined as the law that provides the valid documented consent on any kind of treatment that is to be received by the patient. The ethical issues concerning the informed consent will be founded on the right of the person to know the details about the treatment that they will receive (Dunphy 2014). The ethical issues will include that the nurses enhance the patient’s opportunities for becoming informed by observing the signs of incompetence and coercion. This will act as the decision making of the patient to accept the consequence the treatment (Wang  and Liu 2015). The legal aspects of consent to treatment will include the right of the person to determine the treatment that they will receive. Any health care unit that provides has treatment without consent will be considered illegal. The patient has the right to refuse treatments (Lachman 2014). The professional aspects of consent are for giving adequate reasoning facilities to the possession of the treatment. The medical procedures are well mentioned in the informed consent (Zarshenas, et al, 2014). In the future, it will help the treatments of my practice to be performed safely. This will ensure the legal security for both the nurse side and the patient side.
