In the world today, people generally believe that men and women are different by judging only on their physical appearances and their biological differences (Lamphere, Ragone & Zavella, 2014). The basic theme of ‘The Beauty Myth’ is that the prominence and social power of the women have increased. In her book, ‘The beauty Myth’ Naomi Wolf has presented an argument that the women are under assault in five areas: work, religion, sex, hunger and violence.
Naomi Wolf undertook a feministic approach in her book ‘The Beauty Myth’, towards the everyday life (Wolf, 2013). The author mentions that the standards of external beauty have grown for women and the women have gained power in social arena for their beauty. But, in search for the physical beauty the women have overlooked other aspects of their characteristics. The author spreads a belief that the there exists a certain objective about the scale of beauty that a woman wants to posses. And, in return the men want such woman with great physical beauty. However, the author would like state that the myth about the beauty is not only about women. In fact, the author states that her book is also about the power possessed by men and their institution (Beasley, 2008). According to the given book, beauty is basically, more about behavior and less about the physical appearances. Moreover, the beauty myth weakens the women psychologically, distracting them from focusing on enhancing their social and professional skill and concentrating more on their physical beauty. In addition to this, the beauty myth gave rise to the cosmetic industry and kept women from attaining a greater position in their workplace by offering a way around the antidiscrimination laws. In her book, Naomi Wolf has mentioned that the society has developed a measurement of the beauty for the women. It is believed, that the women must be pretty and beautiful to a certain extent but, not too pretty and beautiful or else they might face harassment for which they themselves will face the blame. The author has also mentioned that how the beauty myth has become a factor at work, media, religion, sex and sexual relationships. All these result in violence against women both by men, and the women themselves.
It can be concluded that the book ‘The beauty Myth’ has beautifully explained the social construction of gender in the world today. However, the author has expressed more feministic approach rather than an equal outlook towards the society. Hence, the view of the author looks a bit outdated as women and men are being treated on equal terms on all aspects in the world today.
