The title of the presentation is “Use of virtual and augmented reality and its applications and uses in educational tourism.”

I have developed this presentation to analyze how virtual and augmented reality can be used to improve educational tourism. We can see that new technology has become a new way to improve competitiveness in tourism industry. It also helps to improve their marketing campaign. Wrenn has mentioned in this research work “Virtual reality and augmented reality has evolved as the buzzword of modern technology increasing with the development of wearable computing such as the Google Glass project to be launched in 2014.” This presentation aims to provide a concept of how AR and VR can be applied to improve educational tourism.

In this slide we will discuss about virtual reality. “Virtual reality (VR) is a computer technology that uses software-generated realistic images, sounds and other sensations to replicate a real environment or an imaginary setting, and simulates a user's physical presence in this environment to enable the user to interact with this space.”  It can be displayed a projector screen, computer monitor or using”Virtual reality headset.” This type of headset is also known as Head-mounted or HMD. We can see that after 2010, Virtual reality is used in video gaming, tactical information gathering in medical industry, engineering and military applications.

 In this slide we will discuss about augmented reality. “Augmented reality (AR) is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented (or supplemented) by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data”. We often call augmented reality as mediated reality. There are various applications of augmented reality can be found in recent years like literature, archaeology, visual art, construction, education. It is very effective in rescue condition (emergency purpose).

Nowadays educational tourism has become one of the fastest growing areas of the travel and tourism. Educational tourism is often known as self-actualization experiences, job development and career enhancement program. There are various opportunities of educational tourism that tourist organizers can take. They are such as 1) School trips, 2) Alternative ‘spring break” travel experiences, 3) Study abroad experiences, 4) Seminar Vacations and senior seminars, 5) Skill enhancement vacation, 6) Educational cruises.

In this slide we will discuss about the implementation of virtual and augmented reality in educational tourism. Virtual reality can increase awareness and promote about specific place for tourism. For the examples below we can use Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR. Or we can watch them in 360 degree view with the latest version of Chrome, Opera, Firefox or Internet Explorer on our computer. It has been found that “Tourism Australia recently launched 17 virtual reality videos aiming to let potential visitors to experience how it feels when they come to Australia.” VR also can increase attraction of a tourist spot.

AR can replace the common tourist guide and become the next generation personalized guide. It can pinpoint the tourist’s location and providing background information on POIs in the area. Reconstruction of heritage sites like monuments and public spaces can be done using VR  SUCH as” time travel effect.”

Finally we can mention that with the help of virtual reality awareness about educational tourism can be generated. “Potential visitors can experience destinations and attractions from their living room.” “Current tourism AR applications have focused on pinpointing the tourist’s location and providing background information on POIs in the area”. There are various attempts have been made to improve educational tourism experience with the help of AR technology such as “Time wrap”. “One of the concerns in urban tourism deals with the issue of space and the limitation of posting signs or other types of information boards that potentially affect existing urban heritage sites. Thus, virtual space has been suggested as an alternative area to portrait and store information relevant for education tourism purposes.”

There are various in which research work can be done in future. for example studies can be developed to improve GPS limitations in mobile devices so that efficiency of AR in educational tourism can be improved. In addition, Research work can be done to analyze how virtual space can be used to portrait and store relevant information related with a tourist spot.

There are numerous ways in which virtual and augmented reality can be used in educational tourism. Google has developed a virtual reality platform for classrooms. They can use cardboard to take guided tours to various inaccessible places like Amazon. For example, NASA is using VR at the Johnson Space Center in Texas to train astronauts for space walks since 1992.
