Write a report evaluating the leadership of a 21st century leader of an (business, government or not-for-profit) organisation. 

Answer:

The term leadership denotes the act of leading the employees in any business organization in order to make the achievement of the business goals. The factor of leadership plays an immensely important role in relation to the productivity and performance of an employee. This report is prepared for making the understanding of the influence that is possessed by the leaders of any business organization in order to motivate and regulate the behavior of employees. The term leadership denotes that action that involves leading the employees in any business organization in achieving the objectives of any organization. The leaders of any business organization tend to influence the behavior of their employees in many ways. The primary task of any leader is to set a clear vision of the goals of any organization before its employees and do enough to keep their employees motivated throughout the course employment and give the guidance to their employees through the process of work and building the morale of their employee. Hence, in this report the researcher has made an effort to make the study the importance of good and proper leadership and the effects that are played by proper leadership in any organization.

Choosing of CEO of a Particular Business Organization   

In making the analysis of the role of leadership in business organizations, the researcher has made the choice of the St.George Bank, and made a choice of Gail Kelly, the former CEO or boss of the Company for evaluating the leadership role. The St.George Bank is the bank located in the territory of Australia, with its head quarters in Sydney. In the year of 2008, the Company was formed after a merger of the Westpac Banking Corporation (Avolio and Yammarino 2013). The former CEO of the Westpac Banking Corporation was Gail Kelly. She was the first woman to stay in the supreme position of the leading banking sector of Australia for several areas. Kelly retired from the position CEO of Westpac after serving for seven years. The Westpac Bank announced Kelly is going to retire from the position of the CEO from February in the year of 2015. The experience she had in the position of CEO and serving the Company as leader would serve to make this assignment (Chang et al. 2015). 

At the time of stepping down from the post of CEO, Brian Hartzer replaced her. During her retirement, Kelly had $12.8, which made her the highest-paid banker regarding retail sector. While delivering a speech at the Foundation launch of the St. George Bank in the month of August, Kelly delivered certain outlines that she learned from her working experiences (Erhard and Jensen 2014). The seven outlines are as follows: 

Positive mentality: the first point that was outlined by Kelly was that any person must at every situation be positive and should watch the world through the “glass-half-full” perspective. Kelly, in her speech, also mentioned that even at difficult times every person and employee must try to learn and try to find out the opportunities available in those situations. Kelly also made the point that the skills required in the business must be regarded as the skills of life. She also made the point that remembered her going to home after the entire day’s toil and was welcoming and embracing to her family members (Follett 2013). 

Loving the work: it was mentioned in the speech of Kelly that every person must love his work and must get engage in that work that they love. It is provided by Kelly that in case any person loves his or her work then he can get better in that work day by day (Galaskiewicz 2013). 

Bold at work:  Kelly mentioned that every person must be courageous and bold and must back himself or herself at every point in life. She described her life as full of troubles, but she managed herself to overcome those problems because she was bold at all times in her life.

Selection of right person for the job: Kelly made a strong point for the selectors of the staff that the selection of any staff must be based on the theory that the right person should be taken for the right job. It means that the persons who are not suitable for a job should not be taken into in any company. 

Incorporation of Vision: there has been a strong point that is mentioned by Kelly that the structure of every company must be that it incorporates the goals and the objectives of the company in the minds of each of its employees. The communication of the goals and the objectives of every organization among its employees are of immense importance. The knowing of the vision of the company by its employees helps the company in attaining its ultimate goals. Kelly also mentioned that at the Westpac Company, the vision was to transform the Company into the list of most respected companies that exist in the world and thereby helping the customers and the community to grow and grow (García-Morales et al. 2012). Hence, Kelly regarded that communication of the vision of the company among its employees is the key factor in the success. 

The generosity of Spirit: Kelly mentioned the fact that if any person performs any work from a generous spirit in his or her heart, then that individual is bound to make a difference. Kelly also mentioned that one must respect every person in the organization despite his or her designation. Kelly regarded those persons as selfish those who do not make the display of generosity of spirit (Giolito and Van Dierendonck 2015). 

Living a whole life: Kelly also mentioned that every person must try to live a whole life to be happy in life. In giving reference to this, Kelly mentioned that she came across certain persons in life, who have attained or achieved success at a very tender age and climbed the ladder in life very quickly but are at the end of all these successes are very unhappy. This according to Kelly occurs because of the fact that they are engrossed in so much work that they do not possess the opportunity to live their life fully. In case any person lives his or her life fully, that individual also gets better and better at the workplace. Hence, in accordance to Kelly, the key component of getting better at work is to enjoy the life along with the work pressure (Heath et al. 2013).

Key Leadership Points of Kelly 

The politicians and the heavyweights of the corporate sector praised the point of leadership that was pointed out by Kelly highly. The way Kelly gave guidance to the Westpac Company during the times of global crisis of finance is a matter that requires the serious appraisal (Hughes, Ginnett and Curphy, 2008). The sources of the bank gave a stunning fact that during the time of Kelly working as the CEO, the market capitalization of the bank increased from under $50 billion to $104 billion. Kelly made the disclosure of five qualities of leadership that the leaders must follow to achieve success in managing any corporation or organization (Kelly 2015). Those qualities are as follows:

a. The backing of individuals: being herself a woman, Kelly every time made the support of the view point that more woman should involve themselves in the act of corporate leadership. She advised the other women who are professional to involve in backing themselves. Kelly also pointed out there may emerge many opportunities where people will get the opportunities where they would get the chance of enhancing their position. At that point, they must back themselves and grasp the opportunities that come in their way (Longenecker and Fink 2015).

b. Risk taking: Kelly pointed that for succeeding in life there is the requirement of the fac t f acceptance of the factor of risk. According to her life and business is a gamble, where in every step there is a risk involved. In that gamble, only those people get the taste of success, which possesses the capability and is bold enough to accept the risk.  

c. The intent of Positivity: Kelly explained the importance of choosing positivity in the workplace. It is immensely important for every leader to be positive at the workplace. If any leader possesses any negative intent at the workplace, then the employees would become demotivated and negative (Marsh 2013). At every difficult circumstance of work, it is immensely important the leaders of any organization be positive and incorporates the positive intent in the mind of its employees. Kelly mentioned that she possessed the intention of positivity from her father and her mother, who were the very optimistic person (Nohria and Khurana 2013). 

d. The primary focus should be on the culture and people: Kelly seemed to be very satisfied with working culture that she developed at the Westpac. Kelly explained the working culture developed by her at Westpac as wonderful as the sole objective of the Company was to render the support and care to its customers. The sole objective of the Westpac Company was to support and care their customers and in that way render support to the community (Tannenbaum et al. 2013). Kelly was also very and proud for the cultural ethics that existed in the Westpac Company. Kelly also mentioned that she knew every employee that worked in the Company. Hence, from this fact, it is evident that every leader must indulge in knowing each of their employees in order to focus their culture and inspire them to achieve the goals of the company (Parris and Peachey 2013).

e. Learning the procedure of communication: Kelly made the emphasis on learning the techniques on the part of the part corporate leaders, in order to communicate the vision of the company among the employees. The importances of communication of the vision of the company among the employees are already discussed above. The leaders of any corporation or organization must know the efficient techniques that are required for the effective and efficient communication of the interests of the company among its employees (Paulins et al. 2016). 

Role of Leadership in Organizations  

There are several role that the corporate leaders have to face and perform in order to guide their respective organizations to the path of success. The roles of leadership are as follows:

- Forming and setting of definite vision: the term setting of clear vision refers to the act of making the employees motivate by influencing them to enable them to accept and understand the future obligations and goals of the corporation. It is a common factor that a unit of soldiers who are young may not always believe any specified orders of the mission by their commanding officer. But a better leader would be always its soldiers to make the performance of their duties by making the explanation of the vision by stating the importance of the role of each soldier and the outcome of the performance of their duties of each soldier. In the business context, the soldiers are the employees in any organization and the leader is the organizational head of any organization (Senge 2014).

- Employee motivation: the term motivation of employees means finding out the ways that help in redressing of the wants and demands and the needs of the employees. The primary role that exists in the part of every corporate leader is to give its employees their needs and also praise them for their good work. Any young soldier considers it lonely to stay far from home. Any good leader has the knowledge of this fact, and that leader would make the communication of the needs and words of the employees. Such motivation is considered as the sweet treat for the employees for their good work and effort in fulfilling the goals of the company. 

- Guidance to employees: the next role of any corporate leader is giving the proper guidance to their employees. It is considered as an important role of the leaders defines the role of every employee that are involved in the process of work in any organization. It is the duty of the leaders to make the arrangement of every tools and instrument that are required by the employees for the performance of their work. In case the leader fails to provide the adequate instruments to its employees, the employees would feel demotivated, and the ultimate goal of the organization would not be achieved (Tannenbaum et al. 2013).

- Morale building: the last important role of any corporate leader is building the morale every employee. The primary objective and role of any corporate leader are to motivate its employee to achieve and attain a common goal. It is the duties of the leader t motivates and build that morale in the employees, so that they never get afraid to face any situation that comes their way. The motive of the employees should be that they never retreat from performing any difficult task, rather they should always be ready to face it. It is the duty and role of the leader to incorporate such ideals in the mind of the employees (Xu et al. 2014). 

General Leadership Practices and the Recommendations of Kelly    

The primary role as a leader in my organization is to provide the employees all the necessary elements that are required in any organization for the employees to perform their best. My leadership, in the formal sense would denote my role as a leader in a position that is assigned officially to me in relation to my ability to make the performance of my job. Such assigning of the role to me would mean the involvement of the performance of the act of directing and organizing employees to perform a task (Kumar et al.2016). For instance, the role that is given to the commanding officer in the military. As a leader, I am entitled to have the charge of everything. I would be entitled to take all the decisions from planning to execution in my organization. Hence, I would be entitled to make the performance of the role of corporate leader in my organization (Walker 2015).

Kelly made the evaluation of these facts in her leadership but interpreted in her way. The principles that were illustrated by Kelly in her leadership qualities were the spirit of generosity, positive attitude, the mentality of risk taking, communicating the vision of the organization towards its employees and the sole motive must be to serve the potential customers (Hechanova and Cementina-Olpoc 2013). 

Conclusion  

From the above discussion, it can be said that then act of leadership includes the activity of leading any group of employees in my organization for achieving any common goal. The principles that are set by Kelly relating to leadership involves the setting of distinct vision, sharing of that vision, making the provision of providing knowledge, information and method to execute such vision and making the coordination and balance between the interests that are conflicting among the stakeholders and members.
