Discuss about the Principles and Practice of Psychiatric Nursing Method.

Answer:

Introduction:

For the nursing students and nurse, it is necessary to know about the nursing laws and ethics. They need to continue their practices legally and safely. Holloway and Galvin (2016) mentioned that the nurses need to avoid the negligence and maintain the professionalism with the confidentiality. In case of health care system, the role of a nurse is vital and significant. Mikkonen, Kyngäs and Kääriäinen (2015) stated that nursing practice is related to the patient safety. In the case scenario, one of the nurses who look after the elderly people cannot take care of a patient properly. The patient as a high of fall and he has cognitive problem as well. The nurse is being unable to tackle the patient and as a result, she ties the patient with the chair by the use of sheet. The assignment focuses on the values and the characteristics of the professionalism in the health care settings. The assignment identifies the issues of the case and provides appropriate recommendation for the issues.

As the witnessing nurse, one needs to take immediate action. The responsible nurse is not taking proper caring of the elderly patients with disability. It is unethical to tie a patient to the chair who has confusion problem and high fall risk. Whitehead et al., (2015) mentioned that before applying any kind of treatment or decision, the nurse needs to consult with the patient and his family members. However, in this case, the nurse did not ask the patient or his family members about her decision. The nurse needs to maintain the ethics and laws of nursing so that the patient can get proper safety and treatment. As the elderly one has cognitive problem therefore the nurse needs to be more polite to him and provide special care to him. As the nurse did not take the consent of the patient, it can create ethical issues that can hamper the career of the nurse. As the witnessing nurse, one should warn the responsible nurse to avoid such kind of mal practices as it can hurt the patient. On the other hand, this kind of practice is harmful for the patient as it is hurting the patient dignity. Huang et al., (2014) opined that in case of nursing practice, the nurse needs to be aware about the patient dignity. Te witnessed nurse can suggest the responsible nurse about the training so that she can learn about the elderly patient care. Moreover, the witnessed nurse can share this concern with the administrative department so that they can arrange training for the nurses who are not able to manage the patient. In such context, Poikkeus et al., (2014) stated that before appointing a nurse, the health care centers need to check the proper qualification and ability of the nurse.

According to Griffith and Tengnah (2014), at the admission time, the nurse needs to document all the important information of the patient. If the nurse is unable to handle the patient, she should ask the responsible person to change the duty system and ask for help. The patient trusts the nurse so she should maintain the professional obligation. She must not hurt the patient. In such case, the witnessed nurse needs to talk with the patient, know his problems regarding the caring system, and make a care plan for him. She needs to know the patient history to modify the care plan. (Nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au., 2017) mentioned that the high risk of fall is associated with the cognitive impairment.  Such type of patients is very sensitive and should be handled with the sensitivity. The environmental hazards can increase the risk of mortality. The care plan should exclude the risk factors that can harm the patient. The responsible nurse needs to be more responsible and provide the medication on time.  During making the care plan, the witnessed nurse needs to assess the circumstances that are associated with the increase level of fall risk. The cognitive and physical status of the patient needs to be checked.  Moreover, the nurse needs to check the fall history of the patient. As the patient has confusion and the judgmental status is impaired, the risk of fall is increasing. In such cases, the nurse needs to consult with the mental health department so that the impairment judgment and confusion of the patient can be treated to reduce the risk of fall (Borhani et al., 2014).  The witnessed nurse can take the responsibility of the patient by asking the responsible person so that the patient can get proper treatment.

According to Stuart (2014), the registered nurses need to follow the standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. In case of health care system, the role of a nurse is vital and significant. The registered nurses are the responsible health care professional and they need to ensure the patient about the safety. According to the Standard 3, the nurse needs to have the capability to maintain the nursing practice and professionalism (Whitehead et al., 2015). The nurse needs to provide the proper information and education to the patient. The nurse needs to consider the timely manner of the wellbeing and health of the patient as well as respond to it. They should have the capability of the practice and provide the education to the patient so that the patient can avoid the risks.  Arnold and Boggs (2015) mentioned that patient education is necessary to reduce the mortality and morbidity rate. They need to apply their experience to continue the professional self-development and action of practice. They can ask the patient to provide their reviews regarding the patient care. It is necessary to identify and promote integral role of the nursing practice to influence health outcomes of the patients (Mikkonen, Kyngäs & Kääriäinen, 2015). The nurses are responsible for the quality care and achieve the ethical goals that are related to the actions. For this purpose, the assessment of the nursing care practice is necessary. The registered nurses are responsible for the comprehensive safe and quality care. This is necessary to agree with the goals and the outcomes, which are responsive to nursing requirements of patient. The nurses practice in their practice scopes. The health care centers can arrange training for their nurses so that the nursing related issues can be solved and the nurses can gain more knowledge and experience (Crigger & Godfrey, 2014).

The nursing staffs can provide the effective care with the supervision for ensuring the delegated practice, which is safe and appropriate. The practice can be related with the policies, guidelines, legislation, and standards (May, Sibley & Hunt, 2014). This can use appropriate processes for identifying and reporting the actual and potential risks that is related to the system issues. The nurse needs to evaluate the evidence based practice for the appropriate plans, goals and outcomes to revise the practice. it is the responsibility of a nurse to evaluate and monitor the progress of the patient health to achieve the expected goals and patient health outcomes (Holloway & Galvin, 2016). Based on the necessity, the plans can be changed and modified. For this purpose, the nurse needs to determine and check the documentation of the patient. The registered nurses are the responsible health care professional and they need to ensure the patient about the safety (Arnold & Boggs, 2015). Moreover, the nurse needs to communicate with the patient so that the problems of the patient can be clear. The responsible nurse needed to communicate properly with the patient before tie him with the chair and ask his permission. As the nurse did not take the permission of the patient, it created the ethical issues, which can be solved by applying the professional ethics of nursing practice. The nurse needs to maintain the ethics and laws of nursing so that the patient can get proper safety and treatment. The health care centers can arrange training for their nurses so that the nursing related issues can be solved and the nurses can gain more knowledge and experience. This training can help the nurse to know about the professional codes, ethics, and laws of nursing practice (Nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au. 2017).

Based on the above discussion, it can be said that the nurses have various responsibilities regarding the patient safety and care. The nurses need proper training and should know about the professional and ethics of nursing. Therefore, the nurses need to have the three years of bachelor degree and experience to handle the elderly patient. The nurse needs to know about the patient history and not hurt the dignitary and sensitivity of the patient. The cognitive and physical status of the patient needs to be checked. The care plan needs to involve the proper caring system and medication. The patient trusts the nurse so she should maintain the professional obligation. She must not hurt the patient. The health care centers can arrange training for their nurses so that the nursing related issues can be solved and the nurses can gain more knowledge and experience.
