Force field analysis is a major development in social science developed by Kurt Lewin in the 1940s. It provides a framework for identifying factors or forces influencing the current situations (specifically social situations) (Sharma, Singh & Matai, 2018). Hence, force field analysis is a tool that could be used as a root cause analysis tool as well. Force field analysis helps in taking corrective action based on the causes identified and accordingly maintain an equilibrium in the situation as well (Jayalakshmi, SD & Kumar, 2020). As a whole, it can be said that force field analysis doe the following to any situation encountered:

  1. It demonstrates the positive as well as negative aspects of a situation. Hence, the situation becomes easily comparable.
  2. It encourages agreement about the relative priority of factors
  3. Force field is also responsible for encouraging honest reflection on the hidden roots of an issue and its associated solution (Shrivastava, Shrivastava & Ramasamy, 2017)
  4. In addition to this, force field analysis considers every aspect of making the desired change within the situation or the organization effectively.

The process involved in Force Field Analysis:

The following steps could be considered in order to conduct a force field analysis effectively:

  1. Brainstorming all potential forces (positive and negative) within and outside the organization against the solution (Mak & Chang, 2019)
  2. Assessing the strength d capability of each force
  3. Placing the forces (positive and negative) in a force field diagram proportional to the strength of force it demonstrates
  4. For each force, discussing how the forces are capable of changing and reducing the issues encountered is also considered in the process.
