Nursing has always been understood as a profession that embodies care and compassion. Although this is true there is a scientific and academic background to nursing as well wherein nurses need to follow certain practice protocols while taking care of their patients. The expectations that patients have from their nurses can come from an emotional point of view and therefore may differ slightly from the actual standards of practice (Al-Swailmi et sl., 2016). Nurses need to follow the protocol and thereafter provide care which is appropriate to the patient while considering their needs and priorities. According to the 6 Cs of nursing, care, compassion, courage, communication, commitment and competence is the basic understanding of care in nurses. Whereas patients understand care as they see it in the community and personal spaces. This paper aims to differentiate and suggest the reasons why some of the nursing expectations do not meet the realities of the patients and what can be done to bridge the gap.
Critical thinking and analyzing a situation before performing an intervention or taking any step is mandatory for registered nurses according to the standards of practice (nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au, 2021). This would ensure the assessment that is done on patients is proper and free of errors (Al-Swailmi et al., 2016). Patients often expect sudden resolution of their conditions. For instance, in case a patient experiences pain, they expect that nurses would immediately provide them with solution. This process would take some time as the nurse has to consider all the contributing factors for the discomfort that the patient may be facing. Media often portrays nurses as the helpers to physician. They are not always portrayed as the highly skilled independent clinicians that they are and thereafter the expectations of care differ.
Second nursing practice would ensure that the nurse should engage in therapeutic and professional relationship with patients (nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au, 2021). Patients sometimes do not understand this concept completely. They believe that the relationship that nurses should develop should be personal and more engaging. But there are a number of ethical constrains with this practice and therefore nurses are bound to develop strictly professional practice with patients (Miron, 2016). They should remain profession and provide comfort to the patients. Patients sometime believe that this is not attainable as they have to develop a space such that the patients are comfortable to share everything with the nurses. The further believe that the mental health and the psychology of the patients should further be taken care of by the nurse. The patients are often unaware that these can be attained through professionalism as well (Kannan, Avudaiappan, & Annamalai, 2020). The psychology of the patients is to be taken care of by professionals and this would help in providing proper resolution. Similar practice is mentioned in the Royal commission standards for nurses wherein the concepts of personal care and clinical care are defined clearly (agedcarequality.gov.au, 2021).
According to the nursing standards of practice the nurses need to comprehensively provide assessments to the patients (nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au, 2021). This means that the nurses should properly assess the whole situation and then decide the intervention (Najafi Kalyani, Illon Kashkooli, Molazem, & Jamshidi, 2014). In this case as well patients sometime do not understand the situation. Often patients feel that they are being asked questions when they complain about something before providing them with interventions. They do not understand the reason behind the same. For instance, in case a patient complains about chest pain, the nurse may ask about their smoking habits (Amalina, Rachmawaty, Ilkafah, & Erfina, 2020). The patient may feel violated if being asked about such things in public, but they do not always understand that the nurse need to understand the cause of pain before providing with a resolution.
In order to satisfy the patients, the nurses should therefore maintain a balance between their code of practice and the requirements that the patients may have. This would include events such as reassuring the patients in case of their discomfort while looking for a resolution. This would help the patient feel taken care of while the nurse would also maintain their practice in an efficient manner. The nurses may also indulge in taking care of the mental health of the patient while remaining in professional practice. This further helps in providing reassurance to the patient . A patient when admitted to the hospital is away from home and in pain. They may continuously feel anxious about their health and therefore the comfort and care of nurses is all they look up too. In addition to this they must also consider nurses as professional workers and respect their boundaries as well. Both the parties coming together and understanding each other can help in developing a strong patient and nurse relationship which can help the process of healthcare to be therapeutic.
