Autonomy and Accountability in Nursing

Autonomous conduct involves accountability containing both professional and personal responsibilities: a personal obligation to uphold ethical standards associated with professional conduct; and a professional obligation to employ discretion in the patient's overall advantage (Oshodi et al, 2019). In this sense, discretionary commitment entails the following: acknowledging that a patient's desires may differ from his or her necessities; complete abstinence from collusion with grossly negligent patients; defending the patient's right to decline treatment only after thorough psychological investigation; comprehending the psychological implications of knowledgeable consent from both the physician and recipient perspectives; and sustaining confidentiality (Greaney & O’Mathúna, 2017).

Nurses are constitutionally and professionally responsible for their conduct.  That is, for the choices they have made and the outcomes of those choices (Dainty, 2018). Nurses are accountable to the patients, the community, their governing agency, their employers, and any other administrative authority that may be applicable. Constitutional accountability requires nurses to have enough insurance coverage, since patients have a constitutional right to require them to do so in the event of a confirmed allegation of medical malpractice and professional negligence (Oshodi et al, 2019).

Elements That Enable and Enhance Innovation in Healthcare

Innovation can be described as the combination of invention and adoption and dissemination. In healthcare, this could be a revolutionary concept, product, services, or care pathway that clearly outperforms conventional practices (Snow, 2019).
