The term drawing is given to different works that are greatly differentiated in their techniques. It has been realised in various manners at different times and it is not easy to define the true meaning of drawing. During the renaissance period the word ‘disegno’ implied drawing in both the form of a technique to be differentiated from the aspect of colouring and also as the creative idea that is made to be visible in the primary sketch. In spite of the insistence on the aspect of formation of line and the designated lack of colour and very few would not accept that a work of art formed by different dots or shading or a whole in line but in a different range of colours is a drawing this can be seen from the example of Galileo and the drawing of the phases of the moon in 1616 (Sheil).
The traditional role of drawing was to create the sketches for larger compositions to be created as a painting, sculpture or even as architecture. Drawings help in the creation of the initial rough idea of the final ultimate idea that is either painted , or sculpted or built though different mediums. Due to this relative roughness and immediacy the aspect of drawing is still continued today (Qvarnström). A preliminary sketch by the contemporary architect frank Gehry is able to capture the complex natural and organic forms of the different buildings he designs. Drawing is also used to immediately document what an artist sees, memorises or imagines. The main stereotypes that were present in the area of drawing were racism. The portrayal of African Americans and the biases that were seen in their representation. The other stereotype is in the representation of women either as a sexualized object and not a human or a conservative human (Crowther). The main limitations of drawing are the fact that it is stuck in 2d maximum of the times and that it can be erased and destroyed. Another limitation is that the mediums of drawings are limited but in the present times due to the advancement of technology, the mediums of drawing is increasing for example the drawing of the Vitruvian man which can be enhanced with digital art. Therefore, drawing has changed since time immemorial and the mediums of drawings have changed over time to make it more accessible and easy to execute.
