Doctors should not inform prospective parents whether it’s a boy or a girl. Child sex preference and selection only reinforce our sexist society and gender inequality. Therefore, genetic engineering for this human reproductive practice must be banned.  

The child gender reveal parties are celebrated in many western countries. On the other hand, in some of the countries, the sex determination test of the child while in the womb is illegal. The debate of whether the doctor should inform the gender of the child in uterus is nit new. There are many critics who has talked against revealing the gender of the child before birth. There are a number of reasons that the prospective parents should not be informed about the gender of their children before birth.

Usually, parents tend to find the sex of the baby before it takes birth. There are sex revealing ceremony arranged in the different part of Western countries to celebrate this gender reveal. This could be associated with the sexist mentality of the society. A child’s sex should not be the reason for celebration be it the boy or the girl. In most of the cases, the colour pink is associated with the baby girl while the blue colour is linked with the birth of a boy. Defining the colour preference with the child’s gender, even before his or her birth is a part of sexist approach to the whole thing (Mascaro et al. 2017). This kind of gender revealing party is the overemphasis on gender by the society. A child is linked to a number of stereotypes regarding its gender and expected preferences. The initial stereotyping, therefore, starts right from the gender revealing ceremony for the child.

According to, Cerrato and Cifre (2018), the aspects of gender inequality is linked to the gender determination tests in some of the countries. In the developing countries like India, the girl child killing is not an unknown fact. The killing of the girl child in the womb has created lack of balance in the societal gender equality. On the other hand, Heise et al. (2019), commented that, determining the gender in the womb is harmful for the child cognitive development. Even before the child is born, the parents and the family members decide some of the gender roles and preferred behaviour of the child. For example, before the child is born the parents start to decide that the girl child would like to have the oink dress and the boy child should necessarily like the blue dresses. The toys that are designed for the girl child are different than the toys for the boy child. Therefore, as the parents and the families already assume these things, the child is provided with the aids that society things to be appropriate according to their gender. The construction of the gender -based ideas in the child’s mind starts right from the beginning (Miller et al. 2018). These kind of stereotypical treatment casts impact o the child’s mind and parents’ expectation of the child.

Therefore, this can be concluded that the prospective parents should not be concerned about the gender of the child at any point. The doctors should not inform them about the gender of the child before birth. The gender stereotypes and the sexist attitude starts to develop right from the day of announcements. The societal discrimination or gender inequality is fueled by this kind of activities. The prospective parents should enjoy their parenthood and the journey. Knowing or concentrating on the gender of the child will only contribute to the sexist attitude of the society. Many of the parents in the western country has started to understand this part of the sex revealing tradition of the society. They are more interested in keeping the gender of the child a surprise factor so that they can separate themselves from all the gender -based stereotype for their child upbringing.
