Everybody has various values and beliefs on what it means to be a nurse. My pleasure and joy in assisting others in feeling better and educating them have always motivated nursing as a profession.
The healthcare providers are among the most trusted groups, making trustworthiness one of the most important values for integrity and ethics. As a nurse, I portray high levels of trust and integrity. I understand that Patients and fellow healthcare personnel depend on my confidence, faithfulness, and responsibility for their patients and their needs.
I believe that empathy is a nurse's ability to understand and experience the patient's feelings, thoughts, and experiences. Besides, I think that the nurse's ability and willingness to concentrate on what the patient is feeling is important to how I take care of the patients.
Critical thinking is another value I bring into my career as a nurse. Caregivers as per Hultsjö, Bachrach et al. (2019), are usually involved in making clear and appropriate clinical choices. As a nurse, one must think and make decisions where patients have issues that may not be clear critically. As a nurse, I need to ask and discover different views and options to assist patients best.
Another important value is professionalism. Professionalism refers to a nurse's personality traits that indicate their professional status. I believe that as a healthcare provider being professional is key in giving my services to the patients and relating well with other people.
Being aware of the culture is ability to understand and shape our cultural beliefs, values, and customs. It necessitates taking a step back and seeing ourselves from the eyes of a stranger, as well as opening our minds to new ideas. In nursing, cultural awareness is the willingness and capacity of healthcare professionals to adapt to patients and their families' cultural beliefs. Cruz, Estacio et al.(2016) further describe that cultural awareness includes cultural understanding and regard for different cultural points of view, as well as skills and ability to be efficient within intercultural environments outside of cultural sensitivity and awareness.Cultural awareness contributes to reducing ethnic and racial disparities. It also allows medical institutions to accommodate other marginalized groups, such as older people, women, people with disabilities, religious, lesbians, and homosexuals. It also ensures that their cultural values and beliefs are respected in medical treatment.
Cultural sensitivity is defined as realizing that cultural diversity and similarities exist and affect values, learning, action, and behavior. Several ways in which a nurse can learn are by reading on different cultures, taking part in continued cultural skills training, and attending conferences on cultural diversity.
Cultural safety deals with the power dynamics that exist between nurses and those under their care. Cultural safety ,awareness and sensitivity, are all seen as the first stages towards cultural safety. As Repo, Vahlberg, et al. (2017) states, the fundamental premise of cultural safety is built on a partnership relationship in which the vulnerable are willing to trade their nursing care, even if it requires nurses to deviate from standard practice.
Patient partnerships and cultural care are crucial aspects of centered patient care. Nurse is responsible for discussing their roles in achieving the desired goal of the care plan with their patients. It would be best to make certain that you share nursing knowledge with patients and promote the best possible care.
Nurses must be able to recognize differences in others, wherever they are working. Being conversant with the patient's culture is important and can help eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities.
Some of how I can integrate my values and beliefs in providing culturally competent nursing care are:
Conducting a self-assessment of cultural competence: One of the key ways to enhance my cultural competence as Lonneman, (2015) states is by identifying my strengths and weaknesses when working with people from different cultures.
Reducing communication and linguistic barriers: Meaningful communication is the foundation of a healthy relationship. When there is a wall in passing information, it is my responsibility to use communication strategies and skills to make sure that the person knows what is happening in the care delivery. When there is a language barrier between the patient and me, interpreters will be required. When using interpreters to communicate with patients, I must obtain patient consent, be aware of the issues concerning the interpretation, and determine the interpreter's suitability for the specific patient situation.
Engaging in direct inter-cultural involvements with patients: Understanding that every patient is different as an individual will help me as the nurse interact with patients more effectively. To create effective relationships with patients, as Dahlke, Phinney, et al. (2015),states nurses must investigate their beliefs, values, and needs.
