Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a psychological therapeutic intervention that is most often used to treat individuals that have been diagnosed with depression. CBT focuses on correcting for the maladaptive thoughts, behaviors and feelings of the individuals that are causing significant distress to their life (Gautam, 2020). This paper is going to look at computerized, or internet based, CBT therapy and its effectiveness for individuals with depression.
Internet based cognitive behavior therapy or ICBT is an effective way in which individuals can receive treatment for a range of different problems that they face from the comfort of their homes. The mechanisms of change are focused on guiding the individuals, giving them exposure and support and removing the social stigma surrounding the depression (Mogoase et al., 2017). ICBT is an intervention method where the individuals are provided with the core techniques and psychoeducational support to identify and change maladaptive behavior in the individuals (Webb, Rosso & Rauch, 2017).
The paper by Flygare and others looked at the effect that ICBT had on individuals with depressive symptoms. Researchers have found that ICBT is beneficial in reducing the depressive symptoms faced by individuals. In their study, the researchers interviewed individuals who had been diagnosed with moderate to mild depression and assessed their condition. Following which they divided the participants into an active experimental group and a control group. The experimental group were administered the ICBT. Both groups were provided with support from an in person therapist. The results of the study found that individuals that were given the ICBT saw different outcomes based on their comorbid psychological difficulties (Flygare et al., 2019). Those with comorbid anxiety disorders did not see a moderation in their outcomes that was significant enough. However, they did experience a significant improvement in their ability to manage their depressive symptoms (Flygare et al., 2019). Those with personality disorders on the other hand saw no or lesser improvement in their depressive symptoms. The implications of these findings is that ICBT does improve the depressive symptoms of the individuals. This is an important finding since ICBT is an online therapeutic intervention that can reach a larger group of individual and provide them with the therapeutic support they require. Therefore, further research on its impact on comorbid psychological diseases and the full effectiveness on individuals with depression will help in understanding the impact that the intervention has on individuals.
In conclusion, it can be said that CBT is an effective method of treating depression in individuals. It is focused on providing individuals with support through talk therapy, guided therapy and exposure therapy. This not only help individuals manage and understand their symptoms better, but also helps them gain support and a sense of normalcy of the symptoms they are experiencing. Focused internet based cognitive behavioral therapy is a beneficial tool that will support individuals with depression by making the intervention more accessible and cost effective. Furthermore, it gives those who are unable to go for in-person therapy access to the intervention and seek the treatment that they require.
