Introduction:

The assumptions regarding intercultural communication often leads to miscommunication. In many instances it can be observed that individuals planning to foreign land believes that there is very less difference between their countries. This worldwide view sometimes becomes the major reason for miscommunication. Several numbers of issues occur when it is assumed that there are no barriers in culture and communication, which directly affects the performance of the company by considerable means. Thus, it can be identified that there are several challenges that exist in the intercultural communication process. This paper will try to identify the challenges that exist in the intercultural communication.

Challenges In Intercultural Communication:

There are many challenges that can be identified in the intercultural communication. In many instances it can be identified that the individuals assumes that all the cultures has similarity instead of identifying the differences that exist between cultures. It is very much common during intercultural exchange. As each and every culture can be considered to be unique to some extent. Different cultures separate individuals rather than uniting.

High anxiety is also considered to be one of the most significant challenges that can be identified during the intercultural communication. The unfamiliar situation gives rise to anxiety, which affects the communication process and hence missionisation occurs. The language barrier is also considered to be the most alluring challenge in intercultural communication (Abugre 2018). In many countries English is the prime language that are spoken in many countries. North America is also one of the countries, which mainly uses English as their official language. There are other countries who uses other languages as their official language. China is one such country that uses Chinese as their official language. Thus, the language barrier can be considered as the major issues in the intercultural communication process.

In many cultures it can be identified that the individuals of that culture considered themselves than other cultures in the world. This type of cultures is known as Ethnocentrism. It is the ethnocentrism that increases the complexion in the culture, which directly affects the intercultural communication. It also led to the individuals to remain backdated and hence the supply of knowledge does not reach to these individuals of these cultures. Thus, ethnocentrism can be considered as the challenge in intercultural communication process. There are other individuals in many cultures who remains stereotypes. Stereotyping can be considered as the form of categorising the individuals’ mind to identify, evaluate or classify the solution. In normal instances stereotype is not harmful, but if stereotypes turn negative then it becomes issues for communication. It basically gives rise to distorted belief, which sometimes turns into self-fulfilling (Lee, Mader and Morley 2015). Prejudice is also one of the major types of communication barrier that can affect intercultural communication process. The irrational dislike directly affects the overall communication process and it led to miscommunication.

It can be identified that in a communication includes 40% verbal communication and 60% non-verbal communication. Thus, it can be stated that non-verbal communication is considered to be the most important indices for the communication. It is identifiable that non-verbal communication process is different in different cultures. North America has different non-verbal communication process than Chinese culture. Thus, the variety in non-verbal communication can be considered to be the major point for miscommunication.

Working On Cross-Cultural Communication:

After the globalisation of the business, it can be identified that many companies started its business in foreign lands. It also increases the incoming of employees from different parts of the world. This practice gave rise to the cross cultural communication. It can be identified that individuals from different countries have different communication styles. These communication styles rise due to different cultures. It is common to have different meaning of the same phrase in different cultures. For example, “I will consider it” have different meaning in different cultures. As discussed above the importance of non-verbal communication is immense especially in cross cultural communication. The setting of different ideas indicates different signs in different cultures, which makes the issues for the foreign employees during the conversation (Mead and Jones 2017). There are many cultures that views conflict as positive thing while in some culture believes conflict to be avoided. As per Western culture, the conflict is taken as the fact that needs to be avoided at all cost. It is encouraged in North America to directly deal with the conflict whereas in the eastern part of the globe especially in China, conflict is considered to be embarrassment. In China it is encouraged to quietly deal with any kinds of conflict. The approaches to complete a single task is different in different cultures. As the member of the human resource management, it is very much important to identify the approaches that are followed by the domestic workers. As the approach is different it can be identified that the time required for completion of the task is different is different cultures. It is necessary for the management of the companies to identify such time and use for the better operation of the company.

The expression of the emotions of the individuals is different in different cultures. In some cultures, it is appropriate to be frank about the emotions whereas in some other cultures is not important to be frank about the cultures. Like, in North America it is acceptable to be frank about the emotions, whereas in China it is not acceptable to be frank about the emotions.

Thus, it is important to deal with the cross cultural communication barriers in the workplace. It is important to identify the foreign cultures and learn it. The relationship in the workplace is very important and it can only be achieved if the employees are well known about the domestic cultures. In many instances it can be identified that there are employees from various cultures (Tombleson and Wolf 2017). Thus, it is important for the management of the company to promote the equality in the culture, so that the communication process can be maintained in the workplace. It is also important for the management of the company to promote the organisational culture that can adopt various types of cultures in their operation of the business. The management of the company needs to implement the cultural diversify training, so that employees are well aware of the foreign culture in which they need to work.

Conclusion:

After analysing the above situation, it can be identified that the North American company needs to be aware of interpersonal relationship, as it is the key for establishing better business relation in China. In many instances it can be identified that Chinese individuals easily gets embarrassed, so it is important to avoid such situation. As Chinese are interested for long term relationship, so it is important for North American company to propose the idea, which has long term planning associated with it. The process of gift giving may not be the culture of North American companies, but it very much common in Chinese companies and it is necessary to follow it, so that enthusiasm of the employees remains high.
