The impact of study pressure or academic stress on the mental health of students is a subject that has been researched extensively. Students who have academic stress are more likely to develop depression and anxiety. Study pressure also affects the confidence and performance levels of students which is why students perform poorly when they are stressed.
Academic study and activities have the soul purpose of dispersing knowledge and information and in the process contribute to the growth as well as development of the young individual. According to Avella et al (2016), the student’s academic performance has a critical role to play in the career as it helps to decide the various academic stages of a student’s life. Academic stress can be defined as mental distress in the context of academic challenges that are anticipated and includes fear of possible academic failures, failure itself and so on. It is enhanced by environmental stressors that help to reinforce the distress and can present themselves in any environment including the student’s home, in school, within the neighbourhood as well as in peer relations. In excessive levels sometimes it can affect the wellbeing of the student as students who tend to study longer and take more pressure end up developing psychological disorders or problems such as nervousness, anxiety, stress related diseases and depression which can indefinitely affect the student’s academic activities and results.
According to Mahajan (2015), about 8 per cent of students around the world have anxiety disorders and these disorders have a negative impact on the academic, emotional as well as social wellbeing of the individual. These students find it hard to make friends and deal with normal life situations as their abilities are submerged due to the psychological problems. Therefore, academic stress is often divided into four different components which makes it easier for identification, these components are frequent academic conflicts, general academic frustration, academic pressures as well as academic anxieties (Bedewy & Gabriel, 2015).
A study conducted by Reddy, Menon & Thattil (2018) showed that high school as well as university students consider grades, homework, tests, parental pressure and academic achievement pressure as academic stressors. Sometimes parental pressure and associated achievement pressure can be the major source of academic stress and can have some serious implications for the individual. It leads to poor life quality and wellbeing accompanied by depression, anxiety and stress. In rare and fatal cases, it can lead to suicides or extreme injury as well. Depression and its correlated symptoms can present themselves among the students in the form of poor self-learning, difficulties in concentration, weak social relationships, poor academic performance and so on. Academic stress and its various impact also contribute to student drop outs in various regions of the world which in turn leads to a shortage of skilled people for employment in the near future.
Although this is a well researched problem the issue has persisted for a long time and has caught the attention of various policy makers and educators. The contemporary education system devises careful lesson plans so that students can cope with their academic studies and activities in a planned and organised manner and have lots of scope for revising their previous topics so that they can apply it in practical and real life as well as effectively manage academic stress.
