Simply put, some building designs require more space and less support, as they can support their own weight well. Steel has a high strength / weight ratio. As a result, steel structure supports a larger load than wood. It is a particularly appealing structural material for steel skyscrapers, long bridges, low ground constructions, and seismic activity in many places, according to this characteristic.

Ductility, the ability of a material to remain intact under tensile forces, is also an important structural parameter. Steel can go through a lot of plastic deformation before breaking, thus it has a lot of reserve capacity. Timber, on the other hand have very low ductility and is likely to fail under very little tension as compared to steel.

Both wood and steel being structural components, their properties might be compared to decide on which would be the best element to choose depending on a construction project. The structural strength is the most important parameter when comparing the two materials for construction. Recent advances in technology and growing pressure on environmental conservation have led to a demand in more sustainable construction materials.
