Reflective Writing

Reflective writing is the form of a written draft where an individual reflects on an experience of some sort. It is considered to be an essential component of academic writing as it enables an individual to critically assess and understand the learning process while pinning both his strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, the main aim of this paper is to reflect on my learning experience in the areas covered in the LDP module session. The purpose of this assignment is for me to understand my progress and determine my areas of improvement.

Foremost, being an M Sc. student in the discipline of Health Informatics, staying well versed with the current trends in both technological and statistical aspects is of the essence. The main purpose of my field is to make the best use of technology to analyze, organize and manage information that can be utilized to improve the healthcare front. Its main aim is to intelligently develop benchmarks and medical care guidelines with the aid of ace information management. We as professionals are required to be duly present in the patient care industry as we are tasked with updating and assessing their information on a technological platform. Therefore, even a minute mistake can cost heavily to an individual and weigh heavily in the field of healthcare. Additionally, having sentimental feelings towards patient care and improving the healthcare sector along with agility in terms of technology is ideally a requirement for the mentioned field. However, the field of computing is not only based in healthcare but also in numerous other agencies as almost all the platforms today are technologically equipped to organize and store data.

The module experience to date has been a learning experience where with each session, numerous possibilities seem to be available. The module has enabled me to learn significant aspects of both academic as well as professional fonts. The main aspects that I picked up along the module session were the essential aspects of academic writing and the value it has in terms of my discipline. I got to know how important academic writing was and how it is supposed to be followed through. Unlike plain content writing, academic writing has its specifications and calls for a well-researched paper backed by pieces of evidence.

In terms of academic writing, presenting evidence-backed data is of the essence and failure to do so may render the research rudimentary. Therefore, for this purpose, sources from where the ideas and concepts are taken for the paper are to be appropriately cited and referenced with the aid of approved referencing formats such as Harvard, APA, MLA, and much more. Each discipline has its demands in terms of the referencing format. However, an academic paper without the reference list at the end would be unacceptable due to the failure to show appropriate proof of idea conception.

I also learned different forms of academic writing ranging from descriptive to analytical and where each of these writings is to be used and how. In terms of our discipline, I have a good idea about scientific papers and on-scientific papers and their writing style. Furthermore, I learned that using proper form and language is very important in academic writing, and failing to do so may reflect badly on my paper. Additionally, I learned about the varied sources and resources that I could put to use to draft my academic paper. Furthermore, I understood the importance of journaling my daily work and how it could aid me significantly in future work.

So far, I have understood the concepts that are being taught in the module and have worked on a few academic writing papers. I have always been a quick learner and do not have any trouble grasping the concepts, however; I find the aspects of referencing a bit tricky. The main reason being too many referencing styles followed by in-text citations affiliated to particular referencing methods. Also, it can be a bit cumbersome to do mounds of research work, and therefore, I have devised the idea of using varied keywords relating to the topic I question for the needed information.

As a post-graduate student, research is one of the essential areas of study where an individual comes across various facts and information. However, through the module learning, I got to know that there are a host of ethical elements to consider in terms of research. These ethical elements are essential as it allows our research work to be regarded as credible while upholding our moral grounds. I learned about the different areas and criteria that I have to cover while conducting my research and how shreds of evidence from the same are to be presented.

In the context of ethics, I understood that plagiarism accounts for the most unethical behavior in academics and should be avoided at all costs. Plagiarism is said to entail when an individual copies words, quotes, concepts, or ideas from a published work and regards it as his own. However, such an act in terms of academic writing is frowned upon and discouraged. Therefore, this is also one of the main reasons why proper referencing is essential. Through this, I have learned how to refer to a scholar’s work without being caught for plagiarizing.

I also learned about the various forms of research that are prevalent in our disciplines such as basic research, applied research, and computing research. More than the types of research, how we are to go about it was taught. I understood that simply sourcing books and the web was not what qualified as research. Therefore, models consistent with evaluating the sources of information are also a vital element. I found this to be quite an arduous task but also learned that unless that is done, the information contained in my academic paper could be compromised and untrue.

Following the research context, I learned that to have a concrete research paper, I must go through the process of researching chronologically. These are inclusive of defining the problem, drafting a hypothesis, reviewing available literature, developing a methodology for the data collection, data collection, data analysis, and lastly the interpretation of results. All of the stages mentioned are to be gone about as stated and if the stages are not followed then the research cannot be translated into paper. Therefore, the researching aspect is to be done with utmost care and precision.

I am currently going through the materials that were provided to us during the module which minutely explains how the entire research process is to be gone about in terms of content. The entire draft requirements as well as the content requirements have been clearly explained and I can comprehend it well.  The writing instructions were provided according to our level of education. I now know that my writing style is to be analytical, absent of biases, critical, and present with both arguments and evidence to prove those arguments. If factors as such are absent then the flow of the work can be affected. However, the aspect that I am a bit concerned about here is the fact that at times, I tend to be a bit emotional and relate too much to my work. So I am concerned about the fact that since an academic paper should be absent of feelings, what if I unknowingly draft my arguments based on how I feel, rather than how it is. However, I am well aware of the fact that I will get this aspect of mine under control with practice and I also am positive about the results.

Academic research can be conducted both single-handedly as well as with like-minded individuals. Both the methods are known to have their share of positive and negative aspects. For instance, the former will lead to a longer duration in completing the research, and every task is to be done without anyone’s help. Similarly, the latter will have people working jointly on a single topic that can prove to be problematic to the team members due to differences of opinion of differential working styles. Therefore it is essential to be accommodating while working in group situations. It is very important to respect everyone’s working style as the aspect of researching is important for them as well.

Through the module, I learned that during such situations, communication is the key. I have always had good communication skills but can also rely a bit too much on my emotions. However, I need to realize that communicating solely based on emotions may prove to be offensive to the other person and thus reflect badly on the said research. Therefore, in such situations, I’ll be required to maintain professionalism in both my actions and my speech. Doing so will ensure the health of the ongoing research as well as protect the social relationship with my team members.

Throughout the module, I learned that learning in itself is an individual experience and each learner has different styles of learning that appeal to them. In my instance, I am a strategic learner. In terms of learning, I meticulously arrange each of my studying materials and allot specific time frames for each discipline so that I can grasp the concept quickly as well as effectively manage time. I ensure that I adhere to each of the demands of my assessment and likewise strategically complete them based on urgency and requirement.

However, I also understand that due to the extreme competition today, strategic learning is not enough therefore, I often combine it with deep learning which allows me to skillfully relate studies to evidence and comprehend the lecture effectively. Furthermore, in terms of learning style, I have understood the characteristics of each of the learners such as reflectors, theorists, pragmatists, and activists. It can be well understood that each of these refers to a learning character. Each of the classified styles has its standpoint to learning. Per these, I feel that I resonate with the aspects of an activist. This is because I enjoy brainstorming sessions and am expected to come up with novel ideas and concepts rather than circulating the old ones. I also feel that using the snowball method is very effective while researching. In terms of gaining new experiences being impartial is of the utmost importance and I have learned that attribute well.

The module also talks about professional and professionalism where the former is known to take up a certain activity based on their learning and expertise. Through this process, they complete the provided work thus regarding themselves as professionals. Furthermore, the latter can be explained by the conduct and attitude an individual showcases in their work environment. Therefore, I learned the value of professionalism in my area of work and how possessing the quality would impact me as a professional. I also understand that depicting professionalism in my profession will allow me to have a good professional reputation and excellent work ethic.

In summation, the module learning has been an eye-opener for me as I have acquired immense knowledge and skills through the sessions. Several aspects mentioned in the paper were discussed in length throughout the session which has helped me gain a deeper insight into the world of academic and research writing. However, I understand that these are only essential as long as I put them into practice and the rules of the same cannot be neglected at any cost. Above all, the aspect that spoke to me was a reflection on one’s work. I found this to be a very critical element of one’s work in academics as it will enable me to see both progress as well as flaws in my paper.
