Suicide rates among construction workers have increased during and after the COVID 19 pandemic. Consequences of COVID-19 affect the economic, social and health welfare of people. COVID 19 has brought about many health costs that will not be fully recognized for years to come. The onset of the pandemic brought about contraction in the economic sector, construction workers are vulnerable to unemployment and financial hardship hence their current precariousness. Lower skilled construction laborers compared to high skill laborers are at a higher danger of committing suicide. Since the workers who lack skill are situated to bad working conditions, job loss, paid less than the normal amount and are of a relatively young age group than other workers puts them at high risk. Migrants are highly depended on by the construction industry relies since they are rarely employed formally. This heightens their vulnerability to be given unsafe tasks to handle, unfair treatment and sometimes they are used for illegal work arrangements and practices. They are more certainly to lose their employment simultaneously as there is economic strain. Since they have limited access to social protection the health, happiness and comfort of majority of these wage earners together with their households are threatened. It is of major public importance to look at these differential vulnerabilities and exposures because they align with basic societal inequities which generally puts them at a larger danger of suicide and destitute health results. According to international labor standards approaches like unlimited access to social protection, provision of livelihood support amid the seasons of unemployment, changing the mental health strategies from being focused on treatment interventions to being focused on the social determinants of health and easy access to affordable healthcare have been noted to be key factors to fighting COVID-19.
Fact Sheet
Construction workers are majorly being affected by the COVID 19 pandemic in various ways. Most construction workers earn low pay that is majorly not enough for all their basic needs, and most of them do not have access to good medical care, which becomes a big risk to both themselves and their families, especially during this disease’s infection period.
Due to the social distancing being observed, the number of workers tends to be reduced so that the distancing can be done. This makes the majority of the workers lose their jobs. Without their jobs, they have no income source yet there are needs to be fulfilled; this ends up putting a mental strain on the worker since they now have to find another source of income. For the unemployed person to get a new job they have little no chance since majority of the people are either working from home or have also been laid off to reduce congestion and to reduce the rate of spread. Due to such stress the worker may decide to commit suicide since they have no means of provision.
Gender has contributed greatly to suicide rates. Majority of the construction employees are men. Many women tend to seek help when distressed unlike the men. Comparison between the general working population and the construction population shows that majority of construction employees are younger and it has been noted the suicide rate is higher in the younger generation compared to the older one.
Construction jobs are often insecure, have no fixed arrangements and high vigour within the workforce. It has been demonstrated that job stress exposures, underemployment and unemployment are heavy causes of impoverished psychological health that results in suicidal speculations and behaviors.
Increased suicide risk in the working population emanating from the Corona Virus affliction has been caused by economic and labor market shock. Knowing that other impacts of economic shocks are present we are focusing on suicide since its outcome is more severe. According to the World Bank, COVID-19 brought about global inflation will be greater than any other that has occurred since the Second World War. Late last year, the International Labor Organization approximated those business hours losses documented in the preceding quarter of 2020 contrasted to the concluding quarter of 2019 was 17.3%. This trend seemed to continue over the third quarter. It was also predicted that the fourth quarter statistics will be direr. The COVID-19 mental health cost will not be thoroughly realized for a very long time. Acknowledging the distinct amenableness among dissimilar crowds within the community is important to making and exercising systematized and dedicated arbitration efforts.

The increased availability and accessibility of online services offer opportunities to engross in techniques that minimize disfigurement and obstacles. Suicide prevention programs in industries can play a very critical role. Despite employers being important associates in company-based programs, they have a duty to guarantee psychological over and above physical secure working environments. Together with unions they administer endorsement services for employees. All stakeholders in the construction sector have major changes to generate in reducing the monetary impacts and scaling up of existing programs.
All levels of the government have critical roles to play in the construction sector. They can do this through creating employment, organizing retraining programs, and investing in stimulation of the economy by creating jobs. It is also crucial that advances aim to understand the ways and experiences of construction workers are different for every individual. It is of great importance to understand and acknowledge that several groups are a higher liability of suicide than others
Employees that do not have all the required skills tend to be socially disadvantaged with a higher risk of job loss. This puts them at risk since their resources are limited to overcome the aftermath of the danger of low labouring conditions and joblessness especially during this pandemic stricken time. Since the construction business heavily depends on expatriate labor. The migrants are often employed informally which makes them vulnerable to be involved in illegal work arrangements and practices. Migrant workers experience discrimination and stigmatization which in turn intensifies their experiences of marginalization. Due to experiences of discrimination and stigmatization admission into social security and endorsement will very likely be cut off.
According to international labor standards, providing all labourers with unlimited access to community care which includes health benefits, wage assistance during times of joblessness and economical and accessible medical management is of great importance and fundamental to fighting COVID-19. This is also in line with extensive calls for psychological health planning to be more focused on the social determinants of health rather than on treatment interventions.
Since the outbreak of the Corona Virus the original target has been on coping with the most crucial and noticeable health consequences of contamination and conveyance. Clearly the national health hazards go beyond that of the current effects and the monetary influences of COVID-19. Thinking, planning, anticipating, coming up with various solutions and proper preparation to lessen this danger, especially to the low experience construction labourers and migrants, will redeem many business, as well as lives.
