Answer:

Competition amid modes has inclined to produce transport systems that were segmented and un-integrated; in their own “silos” where all especially the carriers that function that operated them, has pursued to leverage its benefits in terms of safety, service, cost and reliability. It is like to be evident that competition within intermodal transportation can either occur between modes of transport or amid different carriers like there are various carriers delivering this service and the large number of companies offering freight services have been forced to contend with each other for the buyer. It is because as freight users now have different carriers to select from when it emanates to meet their freight requirements. According to Heiskala, Jokinen & Tinnila (2016), there are certain areas in which rivalry has become much rigid and it includes the price of transportation charged, quality of transport service provides, safety and speed in the course of transportation.

In terms of regulations, the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) known to be the agency in the United States of establishing different regulations and when there is a need or at a specific time, the deregulation evidently happen like the deregulating of all modes of transport by 1995 the Interstate Commerce Commission Termination Act had been introduced, which led to the demobilisation of the ICC (Hymes, 2018). There is further link of competition and sustainability as sustainable mobility research is highly dynamic and in contemporary time has been supported by new technologies so that to attain even better outcome and influences (Qu, Bektas, & Bennell, 2016). This requires investment in all ways possible – whether it is in intermodal freight transport or other solutions. Ultimately, it can also be said that the transportation sector has 3 key areas competition using modal usage, infrastructure use and market area.
