In the start of this course, we studied the several implications of ethics in business. In the introduction, we studied that with ethics. We learnt that ethics are divided into Teleological and deontological. Teleological focus on consequences while Deontological focus on duties and morals. Businesses are modelled on either one of this. In my opinion, Deontological businesses are the better ones as the ends sometimes do not justify the means. With this in mind, it is imperative that every business, ensures that they realize that in the grand scheme of things, relationship with the society due to their individual acts is what will make or break a business.
In module three, the topic was on corporate social responsibility. Corporate shares responsibility is whereby a business invests its resources in giving back to the community and being a good entity in the society. It achieves this in several varied ways. While browsing the internet, I came across the several community initiatives by Microsoft. In Microsoft, a tech giant, corporate social responsibility is taken very seriously. Microsoft donates funds to several ngo’s around the world. This is in its effort to uplift communities. Its technology is also created to respect human rights as it adheres to the human rights global statement. Low energy and water consumption is also a policy at Microsoft as they ensure that most of their energy is from renewable sources. I regard this to be a good way of doing things as it benefits society as a whole.
Stakeholders in a business are individuals who has stakes in a business, in that, they are affected by the progress of the business. They are internal, employees managers and many more, they are also external, customers and suppliers. To ensure success of a business, all stakeholders should have their needs satisfied. In my studies, I realized that, for a customer to be happy, there are a lot of steps that go into it. For the final product or service to reach the customer, the company should navigate the fabric of society in a manner that is beneficial to everybody. This, in my opinion, is very important as this ensures that, for everyone out to make some profit, they are required to be morally right and relate well with others. Being informed on this,
In module 6 we studied the ethics of doing business globally. As seen, it requires a lot of skill to navigate the global market. As the saying goes, “when in Rome do as the romans do”, I realized that different laws and policies of countries influence the decision of a company while selling to the country. Labor standard are also different as in different countries moral standard are differently imposed. This gives rise to problems such as child laborers that may make it cheap for a company to produce goods. Gender is also an issue to be considered in a country such as Saudi Arabia, where women are discriminated against. This means that for a Company selling to a country such as Saudi Arabia, a necessary product such as women’s sanitary pads, will need to adjust their advertisement methods and product presentation so as to convince the country and the people that this is a necessary product. With this knowledge in mind, any international business decision will be preceded to a lot of research on the market.
Techno ethics is the relationship between technology and ethics. This has been a hot debate due to the current internet age. Piracy, espionage and genetically modified organisms have been on the rise with the betterment of technology. In making a business, I will consider the techno-ethical implications of a business. This means considering the environmental, health and safety and human privacy and freedoms and accountability for the effects of a product. Making a product such as an autonomous device requires one to consider every decision and action of the device and as such, ensure that it will not perform unethical acts.
