Skill self-analysis

Communication is an essential component of human existence. Throughout our lives, we get along with each other through communication. Everything we do with each other involves passing on information. However, there are different ways of communication; verbal and non-verbal, formal and non-formal communication. Communication is not based on the opinion of one person but all individuals involved (SkilsYouNeed, 2020). The skill I want to focus on is verbal communication skill.

Verbal communication refers to words that are spoken and written to convey a particular message. Choosing what to say to others is a vital factor as words can build and destroy others. We also need to understand that once the words are spoken, they cannot be taken back; that is to say that words are a powerful weapon and should be chosen wisely (Alison, 2020). I decided on verbal communication skill because we engage ourselves in communication (oral) daily in all areas of life; workplace, school, home, market, and other life aspects. Moreover, this is a skill that everyone needs to use to effectively pass information as it is used all the time and everywhere.

I have come to understand the importance of verbal communication, more importantly, the spoken. Sometimes back when I was in high school, I was a class leader. Back then, I based my judgment on what I thought and felt about the situation and not others. I used to think that my opinion counts more than that of others in which I did not often listen to what my classmates thought about a particular situation. Therefore, as a leader, there was almost no room for self-expression and space for giving opinions. Therefore, most of my class mates' need was not met, hence left unattended. Everyone has a right to be heard. If I effectively engaged others in making decisions, the outcomes about people's feelings would have been positive. Communication is a two-way method with the sender and the receiver (Top In-Demand Verbal Skills: Definitions and Examples, 2021).

Words we speak to others carry a lot of impact on the end receiver. When I was in high school, one of our teachers discovered that I was slow at learning, and when asked questions, I often had no idea as to what to answer since I would take a lot of time to learn a basic concept. In a particular scenario, our mathematics teacher got angry or instead felt disappointed at me and said that I would never succeed in anything in future. He went ahead and told me that I disappoint him and that I would not advance enough to go to college. Those words impacted my self-confidence and reduced my self-esteem. I hoped that he would help me learn and achieve good grades. I hoped that his comments would have been positive enough to encourage me. I decided to study extra hard to prove him wrong and sought help from the teacher who had some faith in me and urged me not to give up hope as I still had a chance to work on my learning abilities (Verbal communication – the key to mutual understanding, n.d.).

Skill self-development

As discussed, verbal communication can be effectively used as a source of encouragement and to motivate others. I plan to use this skill at home, workplace to solve conflict and all areas I will encounter. In future, I want to be a leader at an organization. Leadership requires communication skills for effective production. Therefore, as a leader, I plan to use verbal communication in my team. However, I do not intend to use written communication more often; instead, I wish to use spoken communication. This will help me listen to team members' opinions and views and develop a better decision and a strategy for effective results (Alison, 2020). Also, encouraging others makes them more determined and confident enough to handle a situation and a task regardless of the complications of the job. Appreciating others hard work and efforts motivates them and makes them more willing to work even under pressure.

Typically, I will use verbal communication to be used collaboratively to come up with a solution to a problem. This is done through different members in a team coming up with ideas and opinions regarding a specific issue. This way, we can come up with a solution to solve the problem.  Also, at the workplace and other areas, for example, it is likely to encounter conflicts that require a mutual understanding at school. In this case, verbal skills are necessary, and as a leader, the best way to use my skills to solve a conflict is to listen to the interest of both parties and encourage them to come up with the best solution that favors both of them (Doyle, 2013). In this case, a win-win situation is required where each party is satisfied at the end, and none loses to the other. A win-win situation promotes satisfaction, peace and harmony among people.

Consequently, when dealing with customers, it more likely to receive a complaint from the client for unsatisfactory services. The way to respond to the client matters and determines whether the client will be loyal. The client could come in person or make a phone call. The response in the form of word spoken matters a lot in this situation. Therefore, in a face-to-face talk, I can use my skill to; listen to the client, make affirmation such as nodding, restate what the client has said to ensure that I understand the message, ask the right question such as requesting more explanation and respond by appreciating for providing the information (Doyle, 2013).

Therefore, I can conclude that verbal communication is essential in an organization for the effective running of the business and other areas where communication is required. This skill helps in building others and self. Hence, everyone should practice using verbal communication to enhance lives and make others in general.
