Introduction

GIS technology is helpful in the visualization of distribution, trends, and also patterns of crime occurrences (Chainey & Ratcliffe, 2013). This study used the ESRI’s ArcGIS software and a variety of freely available datasets to elucidate various aggravated assaults with firearms dynamics in the Philadelphia region. The datasets were downloaded from various sites such as DIVA-GIS and the OpenDataPhilly. The spatial questions answered were on crime distribution across the area, the relationship between roads and crime incidences, hotspot and cold spot analysis of the crimes and crime categories distributions.  The study showed that most crimes occurred within 50m from the streets. Besides, they occur in clusters. Other areas have higher crime concentration than others. The neighborhoods experiencing higher concentrations of crimes are Haddington, Upper Kensington, Cobbs Creek, Frankford, and Grays ferry. One of the limitations of this study however is the use of thresholds for buffer analysis that have no scientific backing.
