Question:

Discuss about the Gender Inequality on Business Diversity.

Answer:

Introduction

Gender inequality in the business workplace takes place when the rules, laws and policies of the organization are not equally applicable to all the employees and discrimination exists on the basis of age, caste, religion etc. and out of all the problems, the discrimination on the basis of gender is worst as it is still prevailing in the business diversity and approximately 15% of workers are still facing the inequality on the basis of gender in Australia. One should not discriminate the other in relation to caste, color, sex etc as the men and women are at the same place in today’s world.

Generally, the people of the society have the thinking that women are treated to be underneath men and they always considered the women as bad entrepreneurs, but the time has changed now and women are now equally working and become successful in the business.

Inequality or Discrimination includes the comparison of one person with the other person on the basis of gender, age, caste, religion etc. The gender inequality is the major problem and it should be eliminated from the society as soon as possible because it may have some negative effects on the Society of Australia. Gender inequality is not only found in the Australia, but also in the whole world.  The discrimination leads to the problem in the selection and recruitment of the people and decrease the success rate because employees are not satisfied with the working environment if biasness exists between the men and women. The removal of inequality is required for the economy to grow (Cerise, 2008).

A report by the Centre for talent innovation reported that 43% people in organizations in the Australia want that women should be appointed at higher posts. This is a very good sign to show that women have now made a special place in the corporate world as well as in politics and they are not considered below men which used to be the case in old times. Grabbing equal voting rights for women in 1920s has helped women and because of those reforms the women are now able to make a great contribution to the nation and add to the economy be exposing their talent and brilliance.

Gender Discrimination in Australia

The Population of the Australia consists of an equal number of men and women and population is made up of 50.2 % of girls and women. Looking at the previous years, Australia is observed the employment gap of 15 to 18% between the Males and females. (Australian Government, 2016). In the year of 2013, Australia was on the position of 24th in the case of measuring gender equality on a global index. There are many obstacles in the way of gender equality at the workforce like harassment by the co-workers in the workplace and that harassment may include comments, jokes and interfering questions about their personal life and also many co-workers or seniors have the problem from mothers as they have many facilities provided by the law of Australia for their parental leave and security of their job during the pregnancy.

Job Advancement

The gender inequality is overlooked at the time of job advancement because the HR managers or the companies have the mind setup that they will not be able to give their full commitment as compared to the men as they have their responsibilities of their families or there may be a possibility that the women will not able to give time due to children and family and future pregnancies (Homewood Health, 2015). This type of attitude that the women are not that much of capable of proving themselves creates gender discrimination among the business diversity. An employer also has the fear that women will not be that much capable to fire someone or take some hard decisions when required as women are considered as emotional and soft heartened personality.

Promotes Gender Equality in Australia

To promote the equality on the basis of gender is very important to reduce the problems of discrimination. As a result of which Australia has made a great effort towards the promotion of the gender equality. However, from last decades, women continue to work and earn less amount of income than men. It is also difficult for men to make adjustments of the working time as the women can do it very effectively (Commission, 2014).

If there is gender equality at the workplace is strong, the organization will earn more profits as it has a positive impact on the business diversity. The Gender equality in the company helps the company to: -

  • Hire the experienced and best employees
  • Decrease the expense on staff turnover
  • Improve the organizational performance
  • Reduce the risks of law
  • Rise in the economy
  • Engage males for the better performance (Charlesworth, 2007).

Conclusion

It is concluded from the above discussion that it is imperative to eradicate the sex discrimination at the workplace. Today, with the change of time, women are more capable of work and earn more as compared to the men (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2014). The gender discrimination should be eliminated to make the women feel financially secure and independent as they have the equal rights to prove themselves. Women need to  share about the problems on the way of career development and participation of the workforce and need to explain about their personal stories to motivate and change the behavior or attitude of the people of the society and it will lead to the reduction of the gender inequality in Australia. The working environment of the organization should be such that where the more value and importance is given to the females and motivate them to get the best results. The organization should hire and provides training to the employees to solve this problem, If any of the employee is suffering from the gender inequality, the organization should take a serious action to make their employees happy and satisfied. The economy will automatically rise if the gender discrimination is eradicated from the business diversity.
