One of the of the symptoms that Simon is likely to have is shortness of breath.  Shortness of breath is a risk to the function of the heart that cannot be ignored at any point.  In this case, it occurs when the blood in the pulmonary capillary from the left side of the heart flows back into pulmonary interstitium.  This the extravasation of blood to the pulmonary interstitium reduces the ability of the pulmonary to comply to the blood flowing into it. The eventuality would be increased airway resistance.  In the same breath, as this pulmonary compliance decreases and develops airway resistance, the ventilator drive increases and it leads to hypoxemia. Hypoxemia is a consequence of increased pulmonary capillary pressures and ventilation mismatch due to insufficient carbon dioxide.

When the airways of the pulmonary interstitium are blocked it means that the exchange of gases in the blood shall be reduced. When little oxygenated blood shall reach the heart the heart and the brains.  The eventuality would lack of enough oxygen to support breathing.
