Family health assessment is important to know about one's family's structure in detail. It can help the healthcare worker to identify the potential problem within the family also this type of assessment will help to understand the mental state of the patient (Wood, Rehman & Bedrosian, 2020). The selected family for this interview is an African American family, who has lived in our neighborhood for the last 10 years. They come here from Florida. This family consists of 4 members of a different generation. They have a young boy aged 15, his father and mother aged, 38 and 36, and his grandfather aged 60. The father work in a private bank as a security guard and his mother work in a local community center. Grandfather is a retired bank personal also in past he had a smoking habit. Currently, he is diagnosed with Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diabetes. 4 years back he lost his wife due to cancer. Currently, this family is going through a financial crisis. This report will discuss the physical and mental health-related issues after an interview session with this family also mentioning possible intervention for this family.
According to the interview finding this family suffers from some psychological problems related to mood swings, stress, anxiety, and depression. They live in a good society but they are somewhat anti-social, they do not want to participate in the social event. This fact can indicate a social behavior-related problem that may be associated with poor communication skills as this family is not highly educated (Koprowska, 2020). They have reported not feeling comfortable while talking to another person. Although they are a believer of Christianity, every Sunday they go to the local church for prayer. In their drawing-room, they have 3 big wooden crosses and a photo of Christ as decoration. In past, grandfather was a chain smoker, which lead to the development of his COPD. He has a breathing problem also recently he is diagnosed with diabetes. This family follows a poor diet and they lack knowledge about proper nutrition. Most of the time they brought food from a local restaurant, as it saves their cooking time. Also, they do not take part in any kinds of physical activity. Decreasing the condition of grandfather makes his family member worried, also it is increasing the medical cost. The family also has to provide school fees for the child. These factors have increased the financial burden on this family. To manage this situation both father and mother have to work overtime, this excessive workload creates a problem in their work-life balance, causing sudden mood swings and depression. The child reported most of the time his parents can not make time for a family chatting and he also misses his parents. After returning from school he has to do household work and give his grandfather medication. This in turn affected his study life leading to a poor grade. Recently he got an "F" grade on his school exam. He also said someday his father and mother shout and blame each other for their condition. The father in the past has been reported to have drug addiction due to depression, this drug abused caused his liver problem. His mother also tries to help their family financially but it is not enough as she is unable to earn more money from community work. This increased the pressure on his husband. Also, grandfather reported having some mental breakdown due to this situation. He needs his medication daily, if he misses his medication, his condition gets worse. He every day pray to god to support and provide help to their family. Also, he has some vision problems. Due to their mental stress, their sleep pattern is also disturbed, they cannot sleep properly (Sano et al., 2015). Also, they cannot remember if they got vaccinated or not, however, the boy received all of his vaccines. They do not have any bowel-related problems. According to the family history, this family only mentioned diabetes problems. They live in a very clumsy area also the house is not properly clean. The relationship among each family member is just not right. Both husband and wife reported having a poor sexual life; they cannot make time for each other. Most of the time they stay away from home and stay busy with their job. The moral value of this family is also low and they struggle to manage in a stressful situation.
According to the family health assessment, the identified problem for this mainly is diabetes, liver problem, COPD, and most of all very poor mental health. This family follows very poor nutrition; excessive consumption of fast food can increase glucose level causing diabetes (Phillips & Rodriguez, 2019). Also, less exercise can promote obesity, which also increases the chance of diabetes (Boles, Kandimalla & Reddy, 2017). This family already has a history of diabetes making them more susceptible to this disease. COPD is caused by excessive smoking. Smocking can rupture the inner line of alveoli causing breathing problems (Zhao et al., 2020). Smoking can even cause cancer which can be fatal. Too much drug abuse in this case alcohol can cause liver cirrhosis. Due to developments of these factors this family has to experience a psychological problem such as mood swings, anxiety, and depression. The main barrier for their health promotion is bad diet, less exercise, and poor education. The only good thing finds from this assessment, the boy is properly vaccinated, giving him immunity against common disease.
This family strongly needs financial support from society. Also, they need to participate in social events to improve their behavior. This family can have cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to improve their psychological condition. According to the family system theory, therapist intervention is needed in this case. A therapist can interview with a set of questionnaires to create a plan (Johnson & Ray, 2016). The goal can be achieved by conducting an interview session together with them and making a note of it. Family system therapy can be applied to this family by promoting mental health, helping each other, improving sleeping patterns, meditation, deep breathing, relaxation, and motivating them to spent more time with each other (Clark-Jones, 2020).
According to the evidence, family history and social background have a strong influence over a person's mental and physical health. This type of assessment is relevant for detecting a problem in a family and creating a plan accordingly. Hopefully, family therapy intervention will increase this family’s mental health also financial aid will provide them more support to cope up with the situation.
