In this presentation, we are going to look at Accident and emergency sections in the various hospitals. We will also detail why such departments are important around us, the type of conditions that need to be reported in such places.

An accident is an uninvited occurrence that takes place unintentionally and, in many cases, leads to harm, injury, damages, or even life losses. When an accident occurs, an emergency service is required to help the victims of that particular Accident to recover quicker in case they survived (Atif, et al 2016). On the other hand, an emergency is an urgent need for assistance or relief that is declared after an uninvited occurrence has been experienced.

Tasks and Responsibilities of the Nurses in A&E

In hospitals, some departments are specifically meant for handling accidents and emergency cases. The nurses in these departments treat patients with accidents, major accidents, and sudden illnesses. Accident and emergency centers have special points that are used to take acute care of the patients (Taylor, et al. 2017). Emergency Rooms and Wards are the preferred areas for such kinds of care.

Emergency and Accident centers are also referred to as casualty departments mainly because they deal with acute patients that do not book earlier appointments. These departments deal with a wide selection of patients who attend hospitals with different complications.

At the emergency departments, a triage nurse interacts first with the patient. The triage nurse evaluates the patient to determine the severity of their symptoms before they can be handled. At this point, first aid is carried out on the patients who need emergency care.

Levels of Education and Clinical Experience Required to Achieve a Qualification in Accident & Emergency

In order to achieve a qualification to work as an A&E an individual must attain a nursing degree at advanced levels. They also need to have good knowledge in English and mathematics.

Importance of Effective Interpersonal and Intercultural Communication

A&E is a department that requires communication so as the nurses and the patients can effectively communicate with one another. An emergency comes with injuries in many cases and so the nurse must know exactly where the damage is for them to act faster (Sarwari, & Abdul 2017). This is possible only with effective communication. Interpersonal skills are important when creating and maintaining a meaningful relationships of people at the places of work. A good relationship at work place ensures that teamwork spirit is promoted this benefits the workers as well as the patients.

What appeals at the A&E departments are the passion with which the nurses handle the victims without any form of discrimination. The kind of spirit these professionals have is beyond description. On the other hand, what does not appeal to me are the kind of emergencies that they receive and attend to (Abhilash, et al.2016). These departments experience a lot of strange cases that sometimes may cause traumatization for example;

Common Medical Emergencies

The most common medical emergencies that are handled at the Accident and emergency centers include;

Bleeding

These are cuts and wounds that lead to bleeding or severe injuries to an individual. They can cause internal bleeding that can be hard to locate outside and thus the need for emergency care. However, not all incidents of bleeding need emergency medical treatment; some only need first aid. The following factors are to be considered before seeking emergency treatment;

• When unable to control the bleeding, even if the first aid is already taken, there is a need to see the emergency team immediately.
• When the wound appears deep and or an object can be seen.
• When you can see tissues or even part of the bone.
• When a lot of blood has been lost, the injured person may start to feel unwell or sometimes lose consciousness. In such a case, it is to see an emergency department urgently.

Breathing Difficulties

Numerous factors can lead to difficulty breathing, for example, asthma, allergies, coughs, or even cold. Right now, Covid-19 complications can also lead to difficulties in breathing. It can also occur in someone when they are doing exercises or any physical activity. However, when breathlessness occurs suddenly, it can be a warning sign that needs to be taken care of as soon as possible. When a person experiences the following signs due to difficulty breathing, there is a need to take caution as soon as possible.

• Pains that come about as a result of deep breaths or when they feel they have a tight chest.
• A feeling of short breath or the inability to catch breath properly
• When a victim's breaths are shallower or faster than they should, they need to see the medical emergency team as quickly as possible.
• When a person experiences noisy breathing with a wheeze, gasp, or whistle.

When a Person Collapses

A person that collapses is an indication that they highly need medical attention. Collapsing could be a sign that their consciousness levels or breathing are corrupted. Several medical conditions could lead someone to collapse, forcing them to need the Doctor’s assessment as urgently as possible. Before approaching a collapsed victim, it is, however, important that you seek advice to know if it is safe to approach them or not.

Fit and/ Or Epileptic Seizure

This condition mainly occurs in people that are diagnosed with epilepsy though not in all cases. It is usually accompanied by involuntary and uncontrollable shaking, trembling, or shivering of a body part or the whole body. The moment the shaking and trembling get finished, it is important that the victim is taken to the medical officers to get a checkup. Normally, such victims are taken to the Accidents and Emergency sections. Seizure and Fits may cause severe injuries to the victims, especially when they fall during the attack. Many times, these conditions can be vigorous on the victims.

Severe Pain

Pain can occur suddenly and increase its intensity over a long period. It may be as a result of illness or an injury. Severe pain can cause discomfort to a victim, which may stop them from proceeding with their daily activities. In most cases, pain relievers can be used to cool down such pains. A person whose pain results from injury needs to seek medical advice to get assessed. Severe pain can cause serious damages to a person, and thus to avoid such situations, there is a need to visit the hospital as soon as possible.

Heart Attack

A heart attack occurs when the supply of blood to the heart is suddenly blocked. This can threaten the victim's life, and immediately such a condition occurs, there is a need for a medical emergency. A heart attack can occur to anyone, including the children but is most common in adults. The following are symptoms of a heart attack;

• Chest Pains including a feeling of pressure, tightness, or squeezing at the center of the chest
• Difficulty in breathing
• Feelings of dizziness
• Coughs
• Sweating

When a person experiences any of the above symptoms, it is to rush them to the hospital emergency sections to get immediate assistance.

Stroke

Stroke is a life-threatening condition that normally occurs due to a cut-off of the blood supply to the brain. The main cause of such a breakdown could be a clot of blood that prevents blood supply to the brain. Someone that has experienced a stroke may need to get the services of a doctor as soon as possible because, without that, they are at risk of losing their lives. The sooner a person receives an emergency medical treatment, the higher the chances of damage are reduced.

In conclusion therefore, Accident and Emergency is a department that handles uninvited occurrences that takes place unintentionally and, in many cases, leads to harm, injury, damages, or even life losses. In many cases these are special areas in the hospital that handle patients that come as casualties without prior appointments. The nurses in these departments treat patients with accidents, major accidents, and sudden illnesses. Working in these departments require degree in nursing and some good knowledge in mathematics and English. It also requires high skills of interpersonal communications.
