According to Hamish Bowles, who writes for Vogue Runway, the new Chanel Spring Collection 2021 brings with it a sense of timeless nostalgia. The show set in Paris had created a set that resembled the Hollywood sign in California. On the basis of the interview with creative director Virginie Viard, the inspiration for the collection was the lifestyle of Hollywood actresses. The collection included a blend of garments influenced by red carpet looks, casual chic looks and business casual looks all tried and tested by past actresses of Hollywood.
The collection included a variety of garments inspired by some of the most renowned 20th century actresses such as Grace Kelly, Jeanne Moreau and Delphine Sevrig. The collection not only brings with it a sense of sophistication but also incorporates the element of classic styles within its concept.
The collection is designed to be effective, functional and chic. Some of the looks replicated the 20th century Parisian street styles that were often worn by actresses of the time. This essentially referred to broad shouldered suit jackets worn with a slightly casual pair of denims or tiny skirts in pastel shades. The collection also presented the timeless pieces of the classic Chanel cardigans with black piping that were worn as dresses instead. The new found way of incorporating the classics in fun and cool ways today, express the brands versatility as well as flexibility.
The collection being released for Spring exuded all the elements one would expect from a Spring Collection. Apart from incorporating vibrant patterns in neon colours, the collection also infused the shades of pastel colours that resembled the flowers that bloom during spring time. Incorporating neon colours into patterned outfits presented a sense of spunk that was prevalent at the time and was often seen in street fashion.
The timelessness of the collection can be seen in its theme of following the lives of movie actresses – from the red carpets all the way to them running chores. In order to stay true to this theme, the collection embodies this timelessness by creating knee length skirts in pretty shades of pastel pink with big gold buttons paired with a pink cardigan.
The purpose of the collection was not to showcase high end looks that would only work in big events. Given the current fashion trends that are prevalent today, relatability plays a vital role. Presenting an extremely over the top elaborate look on the runway might earn applauses from fashion critics, however, in order to cater to the normal customer, it was essential to make the looks simple. The casual semblance tied with the garment due to its pairing is a fine example of this very fact.
The collection also brings with it long evening dresses inspired by what actresses wore in the 20th century. Since accessorization has always been a hit or miss in most cases, the brand chose to go full retro with accessorising their outfits.
