Introduction

Cyber Security is the act of preventing information technology devices such as computers, mobile phones, servers, and networks from malicious attack. The main objective of Cyber Security is to ensure that data and information being stored, sent or received is not tempered with by the unauthorized people. The essential components of Cyber Security are confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Confidentiality is the process of ensuring that information is only access by authorized persons, it is implemented by the use of passwords and authentication. Integrity is the act of ensuring that data is maintain in its original form and no tempering has been done on it in the process of sending the data. Availability involves the process of ensuring that a person can access his/her data when the need arises. Cyber Security, being the backbone of technology, is commonly faced with threats that compromise information being sent and received daily (Ravishankar 2019). The reason of choosing the topic is to try and bring light on the top threats facing Cyber Security which many people are unaware of it.

Relation to Computer Science in general

Cybersecurity has relationships with Artificial Intelligence because AI generally works by depending on data collected to make the right and better decision to solve problems. Cybersecurity plays a crucial role in ensuring that the data relied upon by AI is secure so that AI devices work as expected ( Romney et al. 2019).

Data science is involved in analyzing data and giving insight to the companies on how to utilize the data to make business decisions. Cyber Security will provide supportive tools to the data scientist, which will be used to protect data analyzed, this shows a relationship between Data Science and Cyber Security (Foroughi and Luksch 2018).

Research question

The research question is; how has BYOD negatively influence Cyber Security? Bring Your Own Device is a strategy that companies use which allows their staff to come with their devices, either computers, tablets, or smartphones. The companies allow their staff to use their own devices to perform the daily tasks expected without knowing the security issues related to it ( Ratchford et al. 2020).

Research methods

The research methods used for the research include questionnaires, Observation, focus groups, Interviewing, and existing literature (Edgar and Manz 2017).

Evaluate the effectiveness of research methods

Questionnaires are research methods that involve using a document with several questions used to gather information from targeted groups. The questions are formulated based on the research question. The targeted group will answer the questions in the document, and after completing the form will be submitted. These documents will later be analyzed to come up with satisfying results. This method is effective for the research because data collection is done faster and the cost used is minimal, and the questions only focus on the research question. However, the challenge associated with this method is that participants may give invalid answers because of not taking their time to read the questions (Parsons et al. 2017).

Observation is the second method of data collection, and it involves monitoring the targeted group as they perform their everyday tasks. Based on the research question, while using this method, someone has to closely monitor the companies’ staff to keep working using their own devices. It is one of the simplest data collection methods since it does not require any technical knowledge to conduct it, and higher accuracy of the data collected can be obtained (Edgar and Manz 2017). However, it is not an effective method for the research because it is difficult to monitor a staff installing software with malware. The staff intentionally shares sensitive information such as passwords or losing their devices

Interviewing is the process of collecting data by asking questions to the targeted participants and receiving answers in a face-to-face setting. This method is effective for the research because when a researcher carries out an interview with the companies staff on how they use their own devices while working on the company task, the information collected will be first-hand and more accurate than other methods. When conducting the interview, it is much easier to monitor the emotional reaction of the staff as they answer their question, which helps a lot in the research (Patterson 2017). At the same time, it is easier to judge their comforts and pain points related to BYOD. However, this method is expensive to conduct because when dealing with a large geographical area, more researchers will be employed to carry out the interview. It is also time-consuming to achieve it. The accuracy of the data collected mainly depends on the interviewer’s ability to keep the discussion more lively and focus on the research goal.

Focus group is a data collection method that involves interviewing a team of about six to twelve targeted members for the research. Based on the research to determine threats related to BYOD in Cyber Security, this method is effective because the low cost is involved compared to interviewing since a large number is involved at a particular time. The other advantage to it is that it allows interactive feedback making it easier to collect data. However, considering that the members involve the staff of different ranks, most of the low-rank team will not be comfortable speaking openly, which affects data collection ( Patterson 2017).

The use of existing literature is also a data collection method, which relies on the work done by other writers (Edgar and Manz 2017). This method is effective for the research because there are other resourceful research done by other people on the negative impacts of BYOD in Cyber Security. It will involve analyzing several documents related to BYOD and retrieving the essential data from them. It is a more straightforward method because much of the work is already done and readily available. However, this method may mislead the current research if there were errors done on the existing literature, and the error is not discovered while analyzing. Some of the existing literature might be outdated, so it is essential to use the most recent literature for data collection.

Conclusion

Research questions and research methods play a crucial part while conducting research. It is important to create a good research question and analyze the research methods to find the most effective methods. This will make the entire process of the research easier and finally leading to good research work.
