The short story “Mother The Big” by Porochista Khakpour, is a piece of literature that manages to capture and bring to the difficulties and complexities that people face during emigration. Usually, when people talk about emigration, the main issues that are brought up are the problems that are concerned with the documents or the liveability of the immigrant and the process itself. Very rarely does the intrinsic and emotional disconnect face by the individuals is raised as a core issue of emigration. This exact concept is the front and centre of “Mother The Big”. The story highlight the estrangement that the boy and his grandmother have to go through as they shift from their home in Iran to America. Through this, it can be seen that emigration does not entail abandoning one’s culture or country, or origin. Rather like all things, the beliefs, cultures, and ideologies are also brought along with the immigrants. As a result of this, a feeling of alienation can felt by the individual in a foreign environment. “I was invisible here. I was the weird kid, so odd that I did not register. I watched girls giggle about boys and pass notes over and over and over my desk; I saw couples form like magic at all the afterschool dances I never went to but lingered to watch before the dreary walk home; one lunch break, I even saw two of my classmates kiss just like movie stars. It was all around me, but the rules were clear—it was not for me, fake-Michael, that Michael of all the hidden syllables and sounds of my other life”
The story “The Bees, Part 1” finds itself going through the life, emotions, and eccentricities of the narrator’s father. The author Aleksander Hemon manages to recount the life of the father of the narrator and the impact it had on him of being an emigrant. In the ‘Conditions of Production,’ the narrator provides a detailed account of the conditions of his father’s truth production. From this, a detailed account of the mentality and background of the father can be gained as he struggles to write his literature. The conditions bear importance as its shoes the disjunction between those who have immigrated to a foreign land versus those who have to remain unwaveringly loyal to the traditions of their home country. When the father exchanged the letters with Nada, he is seen to regain his composure and linguistic fluency. The letters he received were nothing more than rants about the evil that is America. This brings the reminder that emigration has had multiple effects in making immigrants feel victimized and shunned by the country where they gain asylum. The narrator says that “it is easy to imagine” the message of his grandfather. This is because his grandfather was the embodiment of the roots and history his father held on to which is understood through the long-held tradition of beekeeping. “I am holding the manuscript in my right hand now, and I can see the ebb and flow of his concentration; I can decode his back pain increasing and decreasing: smooth, steady handwriting at the top of, say, page ten, which then meanders on page eleven;…”
