Deviance can be attributed in terms of action or behaviour taken by an individual or group which violate the rules and social norms which exist in the sphere. In the case of deviance, norms are always contingent with respect to culture. Violation of rules can be attributed in the form that laws are broken which in turn means that crime is been committed. This implies that crime can be attributed as an act that took place because of deviance. Deviance leads to social sanction which is of three forms, stigmatization; legal sanction and preference of behaviour of one individual over another. Power and deviance show a direct relationship in the social sphere and plays a central role in punishing and defining deviance (Heitzeg, 2012). When an individual or a group of people possess power, then they try to impose their meaning or definition of deviance in front of the society and other groups. These definitions of deviance allow the individuals or groups to maintain power over the society and other existing groups by the means of laws and the system of criminal justice that has been moulded by them. Social class also plays a role in deviance, as it is been seen that people who belong to lower-income class tends to commit more crime in the society. War can be taken as an example, where governments with the influence of power allow men to kill each other whereas within a society murder is considered as a crime. It is about the definitions associated with deviance that changes its meaning in different spheres.
