Substance abuse is one of the health issues affecting the present societies. Most commonly abused drugs include cigarettes, alcohol, cannabis sativa, opioids, heroin, and many others (Jordan and Anderson 2017). These drugs have both short and long terms effects. For example, cigarettes cause throat and lung cancer. These drugs also promote antisocial behaviors such as crime and violence. The addicts are capable of engaging in dubious activities with the primary intention of affording these drugs (Babor et al. 2017). It's essential to control the issue since it affects many individuals, especially society's youths. Many youths have dropped out of school and formed criminal gang groups to steal and terrorize innocent society members. Mass media play notable roles in the health issue of substance abuse. Mass media approaches such as Television sets (TVs), radio, internet, computers, magazines, newspapers, and many others (Kazemi et al. 2017). These media sources educate the youth against substance abuse and its negative impacts.
Conversely, they also used to advertise alcohol, medicine, and cigarettes. The action triggers and entices teenagers to try using these drugs. Moreover, cigarettes and alcohol are permitted in the country, making teenagers vulnerable (Nielsen et al. 2017). It is crucial to teach teenagers about these substances and the negative impacts on an individual's health status.
