Introduction

Black History or African American History month is observed throughout the month of February. The movement demonstrates its origins in the United States and is based upon celebrating the historical achievements accomplished by this minority group (Priego & Berube, 2020). The following sections briefly discuss some of the major policies and procedures demonstrative of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) within Canada.

Discussion

In order to enhance awareness and compliance towards EDI principles, the government of Canada has developed the ‘Dimensions Charter’ and has included seventeen post-secondary institutions to endorse the same as a part of its ‘Dimensions Pilot Program’ (Government of Canada, 2021). Organizations which commit to the Dimensions Charter must thus demonstrate EDI principles, some of which have been mentioned below (Government of Canada, 2021):

• Members of the research committee of post-secondary organizations must be provided with practices which are inclusive, equitable and unbiased systems.
• Organizations must work towards prevention of inequities, unconscious or explicit biases via advancement of institutional level diversity and inclusiveness
• Organizations must rely on qualitative as well as quantitative information so as to monitor the extent by which compliance to EDI principles have been or have not been successful.
  
  

Additionally, national level research bodies such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and Social Sciences, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Humanities Research Council and the Canada Research Coordinating Committee (CRCC) have committed to the following EDI principles as a means of demonstrating their solidarity in relevant to the Black History Month (Government of Canada, 2020):

• Integration of EDI principles in research practices
• Ensuring equitable access to funding options for all trainees and researchers
• Acquire data and analysis to ensure EDI principle compliance during decision making processes
• Ensuring inclusive and equitable participation within the process of research.
  
  

Conclusion

This paper thus demonstrates the various strides which the Canadian government and other national institutions have undertaken for the purpose of respecting Black excellence and overall compliance to EDI within the nation. To conclude, it is important for citizens to imbibe principles of empathy, compassion and inclusion, in order to provide a society which is welcoming and free from discrimination.
