Technology infrastructure targeted by the hackers

In year 2019, the government computers and networks of Baltimore were infected and targeted by the hackers where ransomware attack was performed by the hackers. Ransomware is one of the major cyber-attacks that negatively impact on computer devices and database systems. In this attack, the hackers have targeted computer networks and IT infrastructures of the governments (Hofmann, 2020). The connected networks and communication channels were affected by the hackers where the unwanted signals and risks were transferred to the IT infrastructure that enabled the cyber-criminals to perform data breach-related activities. With the help of ransomware attack, the hackers were able to access computing devices and communication channels and performed encryption operations due to which the users were not capable to access their computer systems.

Security laws for the attack

In the case of the Baltimore data breach, the GDPR security law is applicable that provides a way to critically review and evaluate the security risks related to the computer systems. GDPR mainly focuses on the privacy of computer networks and devices and enables the governments to defend against security risks and threats (Ozer, et al., 2019). The ransomware attack performed by the hackers transferred unwanted signals and breached the privacy regulations and produced ethical issues. It is recommended that governments should follow GDPR and Privacy Protection Act of 2017 security laws in order to protect data from hackers in future.

After reviewing the cyber-attack, it is demonstrated that the cyber-criminals have produced security problems and performed ransomware attack that enabled them to access personal details and computer systems of the governments. The stored data of the users and residents were hacked and encrypted by the hackers where the government has communicated with the hackers in order to restore data. The hackers demanded around 13 bitcoins in exchange for the keys in order to restore the personal details hacked by the cyber-criminals. This penalty produced financial issues and ethical problems in the workplace and after four days, this price has increased due to which the overall privacy and confidentiality of the systems were affected.

Recommendations

It is recommended that the government should develop security risk assessment plans so that insider threats and risks from the computer systems can be identified and privacy can be improved. The NIST security framework and security principles provided by the GDPR should be followed in order to maintain the privacy of the connected systems and networks. Moreover, the included computer systems and channels should be updated regularly and users should provide strong passwords along with the biometric systems so that unauthorized activities can be managed. It is recommended that firewall filters should be applied to the web servers and networks for detecting traffic signals shared by the hackers and privacy can be improved. Many hackers target communication networks for which the encryption algorithms should be implemented by which the data can be converted into the cipher codes so that the privacy of the communication channels can be improved.
