Poverty is something which is increasing in 21st century and it’s something which defines the living standard of a person. Australia is a country which is 2nd wealthiest country in the world and economy has been in positive side and growth in last 3 decades or so but at the same time the poverty issue is something which is spot of bother in the country. According to the figures, it has been seen that the people living below poverty line has increased and surprisingly children living under below poverty line has increased significantly. This study is about the poverty in Australia and the effects of poverty in Australia and how it is affecting life of people. And also understanding, the interrelationship between poverty, welfare and equity in Australia.
Poverty is that living standard of human life which decreases the comfort level of living the life. It is basically one of the worse experiences and one can say one of the biggest hurdle in better world space is Poverty. It decreases the level of human life and also the standard of living. Some of the common effects of poverty which can be seen in Australia (Martinez & Perales, 2017)
Social issue – There are many social issues which come and homelessness is one of the biggest problems which people are facing in Australia. There are large amount of people who are living in poverty and also effected by homelessness issue. Even in case study of Baillee, in struggling street S01 E01 we have seen that she was homeless for last many years and still looking for new home at present. There are many children in Australia who are homeless and getting affected due to lack of good neighbourhood (Ferguson et al., 2016).
Financial uncertainties – Being poor is not a matter of choice and it brings Financial uncertainties pressurise the life of an individual and family. It has been seen that if someone is poor there is no bright future in terms of financial stability. If something goes wrong for a person who is living life in below poverty zone then it will be tough for him to arrange twice a meal every day (Muir et al., 2017). Case study of Ashely is perfect example who worked as a truck driver but after head injury he has to leave everything and the future of his family looks bleak.
Health issues due to Inadequate Nutrition – In recent times it has been that children and adults who suffering from poverty lack proper diet and insufficient diet or poor diet leads to lack of nutrition in the body. It gives birth to unknown diseases as well and lack in nutrition also causes many problems which appear in future (Wilkinson, 2016).
Economy Issues and Inadequate child care – Case study of Linda shows that poverty is causing a vast impact in Australia and according to the report there are many children who are living in below poverty line and it has increased very significantly in last few years. The main reason behind this is poor economical condition of a family and the main reason behind this is family don’t have proper resources and that leads to not so good care of the children (Acoss.org.au, 2019). It has been seen recently through studying the case that inadequate child care even leads to children leaving the house. And sometime due to bad economical condition parents abandon their children.
Poverty is something which will always be a case of disempowerment and one cannot see a power going side to side with poverty. Disempowerment simply means taking away the rights of a person to take their own decision and when it is about poverty it is more about taking away the rights. It can also be said that a person who is disempowerment has less chances to succeed in life then other people. A person who is living under power line will always be having less chance to succeed as compared to others as they won’t be having much of the resources or facilities (Magosvongwe, 2017). Power is something which is always denied from a poor man so called poverty. The words correlate with themselves as poverty and power will never go in hand to hand. Poverty is something which can never be related to power.
Welfare is something which can improve the standard of living or one can say that it can decrease the poverty level of people. It has been seen that welfare programs are directly related to poverty as they decrease the rate of poverty. A state which is having many welfare programs will always have very less poverty rate as the programs will directly benefit the poor people and will always take care of the need of the people. Equity is fair treatment among the people and if there is equity among all the people then poverty can be affected (Acoss.org.au, 2019). If welfare schemes and equity programs go well then there will be decrease in poverty rate and the standard of people living will improve. If Australia adopts both the things then we can see a significant decrease in Poverty rate. As welfare schemes are always in favour of poor people and it will eventually cause a better standard of living and people will not be troubled by economic issues or being homeless issue. And they will have proper diet which will keep them healthy and safe like others and all this will be a good change for the country.
The welfare report in 2017 is showing there has been changing in last few years and after some up and down in the poverty it is almost near to 13 percent (Hayes & Hacker, 2018). There are many steps which are taken by welfare committee and they are working hard to decrease the rate of poverty. Australian Council of Social Service also known as ACOSS is a council which is helping the people who are affected by poverty and it is one of the best council across the Down Under. The basic role or idea is to develop and promote the social and economic public policy and also the action of government and community by using the direct experience of people affected by poverty and inequality. Another such council is NSW council of social service which also works in betterment of poor people and runs welfare programs. These programs are sufficient to some extent after witnessing the 2 reports (Mendes, 2015).
It has been that job loss is one of the basic reason behind people in below poverty line and one can see such welfare organisation can help them but at the same time they are not so good in sorting out the jobless issue as this is a critical issue and it should be sorted by some schemes or programs which are directly related to giving jobs to adults as well. In case study of Linda, it was seen that she has tough time in getting the job and that kept her in poverty zone (Acoss.org.au, 2019).Another case study of Mary shows that internet is not accessed by every poor person, so the government job providers should not just rely on Internet to help the poor. It is tough for people who are in poverty zone to have access of mobile phones or Internet. It also means there should be alternative way to help the needy people.
It has been seen that poverty has been a big issue in Australia and via different case studies and report it has been noticed that it is causing economic issue as well as social issues. Children are more affected and they are present in significant amount of number in poverty ratio. Welfares can decrease the poverty rate and council who are working in betterment of poor people should focus more on providing jobs as being jobless issue is big reason for poverty.
