Question 1

What ethical dilemma(s) is/are there in the following case? Explain

Response 1

The main ethical dilemma in the associated case report lies in the fact that the mother has failed to provide proper care to her son. The mother has been following a harsh life that is full of drug addiction and was not ready to quit it. She has also harmed the safety of her son by making the life hard for him to by keeping him unfed for days. Therefore, in terms of ethical breaching, it can be said that beneficence and nonmaleficence was not maintained in the child mother relationship.

Also, it has been found that the mother has also suffered from ethical breaching in her past life. She has reported of abuse, harm, physical assault, mental torture which were against her wish and thus beneficence was breached in these actions also. She has also been consuming heroine which is banned in the country as it leads to substance abuse disorder. Therefore, the mother has also been associated with legal and ethical breaching. On the other hand, it has also been found that the father has already been jailed to legal and ethical breaching.

Lastly, it has been found that the son was not willing to take the action of Child Protection Act because of ethical issues only. He was well aware of ethical breaching that has been occurring to him by his mother but he could not act on it because she was his mother and she needed him to take care of her. The same has been reported in the last part of the case study which means that the son was not able to leave his mother during the situation.

Question 2

How might you respond to this complex situation?

Response 2

I will respond to the situation by directly taking the help of Child Protection Act – this is because of the fact that the son was not getting proper from his parents and he was still not allowed to find his own way. This is a way of torturing children by keeping them unfed for days and not taking their care. In other words, I will also try to get help in taking legal actions against the mother in stopping her substance abuse disorder from progressing. I will also take the mother to a rehab centre in order to do her treatment – to bring her back to normal life. She also will be given free medical check up to find out whether any organ damage has occurred due to excessive drug abuse. In other words, it can be said that starting from legal steps, to ethical preservation and finally ending at individual health restoration will be done for the mother.

I will also try to separate the son from the mother in order to make him lead a normal life by resuming his works and studies. I will also arrange a counselling session for the woman in order to increase her intellectual growth that can prevent her from taking drugs in future. These are the overall steps which I will take to handle the situation and prevent further situations like this from arising.

This response can be stated to be justified from the fact that the father and mother should be responsible for the growth of their child and not a demotion which was observed in the associated case report. They should have maintained all ethical and personal care standards to help their son grow for the future.
