Introduction

In recent times, the section of the population that has drawn extreme attention towards themselves is known as Generation Z. Born in the time span between the late 90s all the way till 2015, the people belonging to this group are phenomenally different than their predecessors. While millennials were born at a time of prosperity and balance, Gen Z entered the world at a time of upheaval, both economically and socially. Members belonging to this generation are extremely realistic and are more likely to be of a conflicting temperament (Dimock, 2019). This paper aims to discuss how this generation is wildly awesome in its own realm. The paper will also discuss how this generation’s usage of technology is far more superior and acts as a contributing factor to their awesomeness.

Technology Usage

Gen Z grew up in a time where technology was at the precipice of advancement. The people belonging to this generation never experienced a world without the existence of technology. Therefore, it is not surprising to see that their day to day activities including play revolves around technology. However, apart from using technology for recreational and entertainment purposes, Generation Z has also incorporated it in professional aspects aiding web companies to have a lucrative business. Based on a survey in Australia, around 90 percent of individuals belonging to the millennial generation use Facebook while both Generation Z and Millennials admitted to using YouTube with a percentage of 91 and 88 respectively. Therefore, it can be understood how Generation Z is familiar with apps that are both recreational as well as informative unlike millennials who mainly got into technology as a way to connect with family (Australia - generational breakdown of social media users by platform 2020 | Statista, 2021).

Awesomeness Quotient

Generation Z was born at a time of technological advancement. This essentially means that most people belonging to this generation are not only tech savvy but also use technology in every aspect of their lives. Moreover, the people of this generation are also mostly confrontational and hence, do not let injustice pass by. Having been born at a time period when advancement was at its highest peak, Generation Z also augmented change in other sectors such as politics and culture. This indefinitely adds to their awesomeness quotient. It not only sets them apart when compared to their predecessors but also establishes their position distinctly among other generations (What Are the Core Characteristics of Generation Z? - The Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2021). Furthermore, the current times have bore witness to several cultural changes that have taken place globally. Generation Z plays a vital role in that aspect as it took the time to unlearn concepts like misogyny, racial discrimination and schoolyard bullying which were never disputed with such dedication by their predecessors. Generation Z has utilized the power of technology not only to raise awareness against the several injustices of the world but also attempted to combat those injustices to bring about change. Moreover, what makes this generation an awesome one is its sense of accountability (Jenkins, 2021). Members of Generation Z have had no qualms about calling people and organisations out on their wrongful practices. The members of this generation have even checked social media websites like Facebook for its misinformed propaganda regarding elections. The real reason behind the awesomeness of this generation hence lies with their absolute refusal to tolerate injustice of any kind (Ewing, 2021).

Emotional Connection with technology

Technology plays a dominant role in the lives of people belonging to Generation Z. Apart from the fact that they grew up with having access to it, it became even more vital when social media came into the mix. Along with finding random information on these sites, it also aided them to connect with people from all around the world. These connections facilitated the learning and understanding of different cultures enabling the members of this generation with knowledge about the world and its people. This is one of the reasons why acceptance is a key emotion among the people of this generation. However, being a part of a generation that relies heavily on technology, has some drawbacks. Despite this, the members of this generation have dealt with issues like online bullying and stigma against mental health benevolently. The ruling element among the members of this generation that distinctly sets them apart from other generations, is their purposeful mindset to bring about change and advocate for what is right.

Therefore, from the above discussion it can be understood how technology plays a vital role among the people of Generation Z. The paper also elucidates how Generation Z uses technology for both recreational and professional purposes. Moreover, the paper also sheds light to the awesomeness of this generation as compared to its successors and predecessors, on the basis of their core values.
