Literacy Development and Language Acquisition

Hello everyone! This is (Name) here on your favorite podcast show “Journey of Life”. Today we are going to discuss some hidden aspects of language learning and literacy based on the form of language. I would like to highlight my experiences about language and its acquisition that I have gained throughout my life. As we all know that the skills required for both speaking and comprehending the written word are bound together with cognitive activities, and their interrelatedness. The various ideas from psychologists on the ways that language and cognition relate are explored in relation to each other. So I am going to discuss about the literacy in language acquisition and developing the communication skills which is helping me today from my past efforts and learnings. I also welcome all the great audiences who give us this privilege to deliver you the best content and reliable information.

Let us start with the quick introduction of language learning and its acquisition for me since childhood. For me it was a fantastic journey because as it would be awkward for everyone to know that from childhood I have been hating the concept of learning different languages as a subject. Literacy is not bounded by the chains of any language. It is us who decides in schools and colleges to select the medium of instruction just to maintain the uniformity. Otherwise, there would be an open system for all and freedom to speak in the way they want[i]. However, without an understanding of text content, such activity has no meaning. Although, I also had difficulty understanding text, and as such I do not have the abilities to help them with that. In order to be successful and their generosity towards me but was difficult that educators got to know my level of comprehension, and provided whatever support and instructional assistance was necessary to enable me to attain greater learning outcomes in all areas.

But one fair day when we all were reciting chapter in the class, I realized that every student has a different phonic concept and way to pronounce a word but a fair communication develops when we have a proper knowledge of it[ii]. The language is important in our primitive years to frame the base of any child hence, language acquisition is important to attain the levels of literacy and in social world too.

According to my experiences, children are not as isolated from their families and communities as was previously believed. As a result, research has shown that their self-esteem and sense of self are intertwined with the social and cultural expressions of their families and communities. Family literacies support and extend the knowledge that children bring with them to the early childhood environment, regardless of the varied ways in with which it is expressed. Teachers' recognition of children's accumulated knowledge about literacy motivates them to use their teaching to help students conceptualize ideas about reading that are linked to their personal interests and expectations[iii].

If we can learn two languages at a time that is wonderful and appreciative, but if a child is proficient in acquiring one language more clearly then it is not compulsory for them to forcefully learn the other one. It is framed in the curriculum that one has to learn two languages with the vision of introducing the child into global world[iv]. When a learner is involved in second language work, the knowledge and skills of the primary language of the learner are utilized and strengthened, broadened and expanded. The main areas of development of young life are language and literacy.

Being a shy student I always used to write diary about daily schedules, good or bad events, likes and dislikes, and much more. My fluency and knowledge in different contexts also improved a lot. Students need to learn the written word in their daily lives. Think about how often in your everyday lives you use your own reading skills[v]. Similarly, it is written. Even telephone calls nowadays have taken place in order to communicate instant messages and text, which makes reading more important. So as I learned a lot from my teachers and fellows in classroom.

For me, studies was a medium to escape from the reality of the world and you can say I was an escapist who was afraid of handling social and cultural obligations. But the very encounter with the social world let me down and I felt hurt because I was not able to represent myself and the other team won because I was lagging in communicating. Though, knowing all the questions but could not answered it well. This was the first social and psychological challenge came to me when I decided to work upon literacy skills in training language[vi]. Politically, it is everywhere bound to speak and learn the second language because that confirms your literacy levels. Social status, intellectual capacity. Motivation, creativity, satisfaction, aptitude, family recognition, career boost up, and judgement are some outcomes which came from the learning attitude of language and literacy[vii].

However, literacy plays a vital role beyond the functional level in making students socially involved. To read or write means keeping abreast of current events, to communicate effectively and to understand the questions that shape our world. Literacy development can be achieved following basic steps while learning like a student should always encourage reading, and analyze the texts, they should also support the games, and puzzles, etc. which enhances the vocabulary and language acquisition skills[viii].

The second change came inside me when I realized the importance of language in literacy and development was because I missed a chance in a competition where they asked simple but intellectual connections between language development and second language acquisition. Till date, I was comfortable in pursuing and concentrating my actions and learning in first language and did not understood the concept of multiliteracy. That was the turning point and it changed my perspective for language importance[ix]. The most embarrassing moment for a person is when he/she is not able to deliver his thoughts appropriately in from of the people. This is the time wherein if a person knows how to speak and manipulate the knowledge into words, that person is a winner and I have seen one intellectual who was not having any such professional degrees of management but he is managing a vast empire because he knew what he is delivering. This instance made me feel more conscious to learn and upgrade myself into acquiring language in all forms for better appraisal and success.
