This letter is in regards to raising awareness about the Uluru Statement from the heart among the people of Australia. The statement’s relevance and impact play a vital role in the political development of Australia as a country. Informing the general public about the statement not only educates them about the political stance of our government but also informs them about the rights of the First People of our nation.

The Uluru Statement from the heart, held in Uluru in Australia on 26^th May 2017, is a statement that was signed by the delegates of the First Nations National Constitutional Convention. The statement was essentially in accordance to the referendum of 1967 that brought changes in the Australian constitution by suggesting the inclusion of Aboriginals and islanders from Torres Strait in population counts. The referendum also gave the government of Australia powers to make laws for the indigenous people living in the country (Norman, 2019). 

The statement essentially requested that an individual of aboriginal descent be appointed as the “First Nations Voice”. This states that the Australian constitution appoint a person to represent the voices of the aboriginal people during agreement and law making initiatives by the government. The statement requests that a relationship of total transparency be maintained between the two parties (Rubenstein, 2018). This clearly states that in terms of governmental decisions, in regards to the inhabitants of Australia, the aboriginals be taken into account and a relationship built on complete truth be established between the two.

This request for supervision during the making of laws and agreements is referred to as Makarrata Commission (Appleby & Davis, 2018). The statement is not only a wish of the First People to be included in the population counting of the country but also a way to establish a free and liberal government, where all members of the country are treated as equals. The statement also brings forth the longstanding practice of discrimination faced by the indigenous people of the country, which is why the statement requests for public acceptance. Through the statement, the aboriginals also ask the people of the country to accept as well as respect the sovereignty of the First People (McKay, 2017).

The need to have a statement in the first place is not only because of the social discrimination faced by the indigenous people of the country but also because of the severe lack of equal treatment both economically and medically. This essentially states that the people belonging to aboriginal groups are discriminated against in professional sectors. This results in them not having high paying jobs, which eventually affects their health plans. In order to afford proper health care, having a well paying mode of income is an absolute necessity. However, due to the prevalence of social discrimination in economic sectors, only a few indigenous people are able to seek high paying jobs. This lays emphasis on the fact that due to their low income, they are unable to avail health benefit offers unlike other citizens of Australia (Talley & Nicholas, 2018).

The people of Australia need to stand beside the indigenous people of the country and demand for equal treatment as without it, the aboriginal tribes will continue to suffer. In terms of health, constitutional changes must be implemented that ensure that the medical needs of indigenous people are met with the same promptness that would be applied for any other citizen of the country. 

The Uluru Statement is essentially a statement of friendship initiated by the aboriginal people for all the people of Australia (Fleay & Judd, 2019). In order to bring about noticeable change in the very system, it is mandatory for the people of Australia to support the Uluru Statement and also bring about change in their respective social groups by advocating for equal treatment in regards to aboriginal people. Moreover, the government must make amendments that ensure the equal treatment of people belonging to aboriginal groups. This essentially refers to the fact that strict actions must be implemented against those individuals who take part in discriminative practices in regards to indigenous people.

The people of Australia are aware of the situation stated in the Uluru Statement. However, the gravity of the situation and the necessity for implementing constitutional change is something that a great majority of people are still unaware of. Raising awareness not only about the Uluru Statement and its requests but also about how people belonging to indigenous groups are treated in the country is an absolute necessity. In order to bring about big changes such as putting a stop to discrimination and creating laws that would aid the people of these groups, the entire country must come together in solidarity.

The statement, despite having been written in accordance to the Referendum in the year 1976, is essentially a request for peace. This further elucidates the gravity of discrimination faced by the people of these groups on a daily basis. Their request for friendship, acceptance and respect hence, becomes of utmost priority.

In order for Australia to have an overall development, every citizen must be satisfied with the benefits and support they receive from the resident country. Moreover, social stigmas like discrimination, oppression, racial violence etc contribute to the downfall of a country’s social structure. In addition to this, The Uluru Statement is not only a statement of request made by indigenous people but also a plea for acceptance and equality. In order for our country to flourish in all sectors of the society nationally as well as globally, the statement must be acknowledged and necessary changes must be implemented. The people from all over the country must come together in order to bring about changes and stand in solidarity with the people belonging to aboriginal groups.Thus from the above discussion, I have attempted to raise awareness about the Uluru Statement.
