I. Raising the minimum age of drinking from current MLDA of 21 is a more sensible step than raising it from 18 to 21 as the highest number of drinkers among the young adult demographic are not highschoolers or school students but college students who indulge in gravely irresponsible drinking given by the fact that they can obtain alcohol in their campuses and can even circumvent the problem of the current legal age by just lying about their current year of study or even going ahead to procure fake identification.

II. Raising the minimum drinking age even higher, for example 25 would ensure that college students from undergraduate colleges cannot drink till they have actually graduated from the college or have assimilated into a more responsible lifestyle which may reduce the excessive and irresponsible drinking habits that young college students cultivate.

I. The minimum drinking age of 21 is a correct age of initiation for the right to drink considering the risk and dangers that it poses in the form of liabilities and consequences. Most rights in the states have a reasonable minimum requirement of age, for example one cannot buy firearms, gamble in a casino or adopt a child until the age of 21 is reached. So the age of 21 can be perceived in this regard as the threshold for minimum expected maturity.

II. Raising the minimum legal drinking age to 21 has already accomplished the goals that may be expected to be accomplished by raising it even further. The minimum legal drinking age of 21 has resulted in significantly lower numbers of highway and traffic fatalities being recorded.

Thesis Statement

While on the basis of a dogmatic argument based completely on mostly individual morals applied in a vicarious fashion, it might appear that raising the drinking age above the current minimum legal drinking age is a wise suggestion. But on evaluation of statistics and applying common understanding of a prudent young adult, the suggestion seems more motivated by opinions and emotions than by results and actual data. The truth obtained through evaluation of easily available data presents the contrary to the above assumption and suggestion:

The minimum age for legal drinking had been already raised from 18 to 21 years. Raising the minimum legal drinking age to 21 years prevented bars and alcohol stores from selling to posing children of ages at which alcohol is medically irresponsible. It achieved the goal of limiting drinking to a population that had a completely developed brain and was already old enough to make decisions like voting, or even owning a firearm.
The advantages achieved by the current minimum legal drinking age can also be observed when the situation with Europe’s minimum legal drinking age of 18 years is compared. A higher percentage of underage drinkers are found in the 15-17 years age bracket in Europe than in the United States. This shows considerable improvements made over the issue of children being led into alcohol dependence and its abuse.
The administration envisioned the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984, to reduce the number of fatalities that took place on public highways from people driving under the influence of alcohol. The success in this regard is highly visible as the number of fatalities have reduced by over a third and as National HIghway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that MLDA 21 has 31,417 from 1975-2016.

In the 2019 survey, “European School Survey Project on Alcohol and other Drugs”, it was observed, “ Even though alcohol use among adolescents seems to have decreased in many ESPAD countries, it is still rather high, with on average around 80 % of students reporting alcohol use in their lifetime and almost half reporting use in the last month” (Mokinaro et al. 114) .

In the 2017 article, “The Minimum Legal Drinking Age and Morbidity in the United States”, it is stated, “our results suggest that the literature’s disproportionate focus on mortality misses a significant part of the benefits of stricter alcohol control. Thus, the case for government intervention in this setting is stronger than previously understood.” (Carpenter and Dobkin 9).
