Introduction

In healthcare settings a dying patient need critical care in four regions such as physical comfort, spiritual comfort, mental and emotional comfort, and practical tasks. The major aim of nurses in caring for a dying patient is to deliver personal support and provide all the mentioned comforts and ensuring a peaceful death, by considering the patient's values, beliefs and culture and outlook on life (nia.nih.gov, 2021). In this study, the discussion will be based on the personal experience on caring for dying patient and the role of the nurse in providing physical, spiritual and mental comfort.

Personal Experience Of Caring For a Dying Patient

The experience in palliative care is very stressful for the nurses and the experience is similar to me as well. One of the major stress or challenge that comes into the palliative care is the pressure from the family members of the dying patient. The values and beliefs, and fear or sorrow of the family members turned into violation. We often experience high burden and anxiety while taking care of the dying patients. I have experienced that many patients spent their last weeks in various hospitals, transferring from one place to another and receiving symptom based treatment and lacking spiritual or mental comfort .While growing up with taking care of the dying patients we have also realized that there were many obstacles that need to be overcome in future to develop hospice care and dying patient care. The patients in last stage of their life have so much expectations from their life and the needs of the dying patient could not get completed every time (Liang & Hu, 2018). However, we try our best to fulfill their wish and provide them best comfort in their last stage.

Clarification Of Beliefs And Values Of Personal Faith Tradition

Spirituality is one of the integral part of any belief, and can also be a significant part of an individual’s life at the end phase. Spiritual care makes a crucial thought within the endeavor to address the all-encompassing involvement of those patients accepting palliative care. Many people want to get spiritually comfort in their last phase. Health professionals need to be aware of various cultural attitudes and must be able to help accommodate the patient’s wishes (Choudry, Latif & Warburton, 2018).

I believe in United Church of Christ and Christians mainly believe that when a person die God judges them and the souls either go to heaven or hell where they get reward or punishment. Most of the patients are mainly followers of these Christianity faiths and believes life after death promised by God and we try to act as per their spiritual value to provide them comfort.

The United Church of Christ belief that I follow teaches me to give the right to palliative care patients in making their own decisions and it also supports the family involvement before discontinuing the treatment. As the church believes that every family member has a right to decide about the death care of their loved ones (pewforum.org, 2021). Based on the church teachings I believe that listening and keeping the words of the patient on their last bed is my ultimate responsibility that would give them a mental and spiritual comfort in the last life phase.

Nursing Role

The role of a nurse in caring for a patient approaching to death, is to provide the patient personal support as well as maintain an acceptable lifestyle and ensuring peaceful death, and taking into consideration about the culture, values and beliefs as well as preferences of the patient (Ali & Ayoub, 2010). The role of the nurture amid the dying stage is to giving support to the patient and patient's family by teaching them what they might anticipate happening amid this time, tending to their questions and concerns truly, being a dynamic audience, and giving emotional support as well as guidance. The nurture can console family members all through the death time by being show discontinuously or persistently, modeling behaviors, giving support in connection to family caregiving, giving consolation around normal physiologic changes, and empowering the family. Based on the advance directive of the patient or the treatment or death option he chooses the healthcare team or nurses need to act in the last phase of the patient life.

Conclusion

From the above discussion the fact is clear that Palliative care patient seeks mental and spiritual comfort. In healthcare settings a dying patient need critical care physical comfort, spiritual comfort, mental and emotional comfort are the most important things that nurses need to consider. Beside the patient nurses also need to take care of their families to give them moral support and stop them from total breakdown.
