Youth participation in sport is something that over the years has strongly been impacted by racial discriminatory practices. Boys and girls of colour have seldom been provided with equal opportunities to growth and development in the world of sport, in comparison to their white participation (Wending et al., 2018). Over the years, this has led to greater participation of white people in sporting events compared to those who are black or people of colour, regardless of the sporting abilities of the latter and it was only from the decade of the 1960’s and the birth of the civil rights movement, not just in America but in other parts of the world as well, that things began to truly change (Wending et al., 2018).

Gender has impacted youth participation in sporting activities as well. Boys have traditionally been preferred over girls for participation in sporting activities, on account of their physical strength and their ability to survive in a physical environment, better than women. This too has led to greater number of men participating in sporting activities, compared to women (Amoo-Achampong et al., 2017).

Systemic structure has come to exert an influence on youth participation in sport as well. People of elite and well to do families have a say in who gets to participate in sporting events and who does not. Those from marginalized backgrounds are often relegated to the background, insofar as youth participation in sport is concerned (Amoo-Achampong et al., 2017).

High school sports in America can be described as out of control because of racial and gender based discriminatory practices that prevail here (Wending et al., 2018).
