Fat metabolism: Adipose tissue stores fats (lipids). The molecules of fat contained in the body are synthesized from fat breakdown products (glycerol and fatty acids) in a process called lipogenesis. The fat deposits are mobilized and transported from the adipose tissues to lipolysis, where appropriate, and divided into glycerol and fatty acids in the liver. Glycerol is transformed into an intermediate of glycolysis that contributes to the respiration process of the cell. In a series of reactions known as beta-oxidation, fatty acids are converted to acetyl CoA molecules, which then enter cell metabolism through Kreb's cycle.
Protein Metabolism: Proteins are used as a source of energy only if the consumption of proteins is high, or if the glucose or fat reserves are reduced and protein amino acids are transformed into molecules that join the TCA cycle/Kreb's Cycle.
