Teens abuse drugs due to a variety of reasons according to a report by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (2014). These reasons include; to fit in, here, they abuse drugs because their friends or networks are doing it. They fear being isolated and rejected from their social circles hence abuse drugs to fit in. Some teens abuse drugs to feel good. Most drugs induce euphoria by stimulating the brain to release endorphins and dopamine which causes euphoria, some teens thus abuse drugs to experience this temporary pleasurable feeling. Some teens suffer from mental disorders like depression, physical pain, and anxiety disorder, abusing drugs makes them feel better. Finally, some teens abuse drugs to experiment secondary to the curiosity they develop about certain drugs.

Substances commonly abused by teenagers include; Marijuana, Amphetamines, Synthetic marijuana, and prescription painkillers. The unique symptom of marijuana overdosing that is different from those of cocaine overdosing is pale skin secondary to vasospasms and platelet aggregation, cocaine triggers these processes when overdosed. There are several private and public agencies that help teenagers to kick the habit, public agencies include; the National Institutes on Health (NIH), The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Private agencies that help with drug abuse and addiction in the United States include;
