1. The title “Food Machine” is referring to America as an industrially revolutionized factory which produces food for the entire country as a whole. The food producing industry with its advanced technology has made the country’s agriculture industry into one of the most efficient, productive “Food Machine”. The “food machine” is a giant food industry that is built to feed the entire country and it produces rapidly, efficiently and more than what is consumed by the country.
2. The most significant benefits of small-scale urban agriculture are the immense production of food that consistently feeds the whole population. It produces more than what the country can consume and it does so for 365 days every year. However, there are limitations in this sector as well and the most prominent limitation is the growing demand and the lack of natural resources. The water resources, for instance, is scarce which has contributed towards the rising cost.
3. Agriculture has been a challenging occupation, especially when there is a scarcity of natural resources and high-cost of technology used to replace those natural resources. Therefore, not many individuals are interested in investing and working in such a nomadic industry and prefer to live a more urban lifestyle with corporate businesses and jobs. It is a negative trend because only 2% of the population is feeding the other 98% which is a growing challenge to keep up with the growing demands.
4. No, I do not see a problem with the trend of mainly only growing corn. For instance, in an average, a store has over 45’000 products out of which one-third of the products are made with corn. Corn Starch is used to make almost anything after being refined and processed. However, it would also have been more efficient if more variety of crops are produced in order for the food market to keep its balance and not wholly depend on corn.
5. The animals reared in the CAFO, the animals are reared and “created” in such a way that they can satisfy the specific needs of the consumers and the producers. Basically, the meat is “engineered” to meet the consumers’ tastes. The animals are conceived artificially, they are given antibiotics to prevent diseases and are given growth hormones supplemented diets to maximize their calories. These animals are made specifically to satisfy the beef cravings of the consumers.
6. With the use of modern and advanced technologies which were otherwise not available prior to the industrial revolution, the farmers of the country have managed to triple their growth. The large consumer demand has enabled them to invest more in their business and expand it further, gradually expanding their yielding in the process.
7. Due to “craveability”, the American food machine has made it easy and cheap to consume high-calorie foods. However, it has also had an effect on the food machine. The growing demand of the hungry population is consistent and it has become a challenge for the food machine to keep up, seeing as there is a large scarcity of natural resources which in turn is contributing towards rising costs and the population’s demand is consistently growing.
