Introduction

Numerous studies have agreed that we have unconscious bias which influence clinical practice while providing patient care. It is referred to as bias in actions and judgement which emanates from stereotypes and attitudes. My paper examines how this influence and affect patient care in nursing.

Unconscious bias which is usually unintended, affects knowledge and practice of patient care in several negative ways. It leads to unequal treatment of patients hence causing differences in healthcare outcomes. In a study conducted by institute of medicine recently found that racial and ethnic biases, prejudices and stereotyping arising from patient care providers contribute greatly to unequal treatment of patients (AACCN, 2018). This unequal treatment results into disparity in patient provision of patient care. Also, various studies have realized that medical professionals that exhibited higher unconscious bias have poor interaction with their patients, an issue that breeds a mistrust between the health care providers and the patient (AACCN, 2018). Therefore, in a case where a patient doesn’t trust the health care giver, treatment offered fails to be fruitful.

It also influences and affects clinical practice and knowledge during provision of patient care through under treatment conditions. Any form of unconscious bias such as ethnic on part of health care providers contribute majorly to under treatment of diseases like heart disease, mental and asthma (Bendix, 2019). Patients feel that their health providers do not care about them leading to negligence on part of patients.

Unconscious bias exists on part of medical professional. It results to unequal treatment of patients, disparity in health care outcome, mistrust medical practitioners and under treatment of some conditions and diseases like asthma.
