Analysis of the Scenario

As mentioned in the scenario, Amira, initiates to adjust the hijab of Mariam. Amira also mentioned that Mariam looks more relaxed after taking it off from her head. Mariam did not respond to the initiative of Amira. From the perspective of Moua (2011), the scenario reflects the notion of ethnocentrism.

Ethnocentrism can be defined as a type of cultural concept that allows an individual to think their way is the only way of living. The concept was initially used by anthropologists however, it is now associated with the field of society, culture and religion. Moua (2011) mentioned that, ethnocentrism includes two different fallacies. First fallacy includes the way of using different notions of ethnocentrism to indicate different as well as disconnected phenomena. The second fallacy includes the tendency to measure the notion of ethnocentrism through different concepts. The scenario of Amira and Mariam falls into the second fallacy of ethnocentrism.

Amira thought the headscarf of Mariam was creating difficulty for her. However, there is no mention about Mariam complaining about any trouble related to headscarf. On the other hand, Mariam did not react for the activity of Amira and it is hard to trace whether she liked or disliked the activity of Amira. In recommendation, it can be said that, if being placed in the situation of Mariam, it will be better to make Amira understand if she is liking or disliking the activity. It would be better for Amira to understand that the way she thinks about other’s difficulty may not be always right.
