Social Stigma is defined as the discrimination against a particular group of people, a place, or a nation in the form of a negative attitude (Bharadwaj, Pai, & Suziedelyte, 2017). Yes, there is a stigma surrounding the psychological disorder. When anyone views you negatively because of your mental condition, this is known as stigma. Social stigma and prejudice can exacerbate mental health issues and prevent people from seeking support when they need it. It makes a person believe that they are not mentally stable and the discrimination won’t let them ask for help.
Public views mental and physical health differently. People give more importance to physical health and care of their physical health. However, nobody cares about their mental health, even the public views mental health and physical health differently (Ohrnberger, Fichera, 2017). If a person is physically fit but mentally, he is not fit, in that case, he is to be considered as Non-fit. Because one’s mental health is equally important to physical health. Poor mental health can negatively impact the physical health of a person. Society thinks that the person who is not fit mentally they considered as a mental patient. They won’t consider him in any activity and makes him feel bad about his illness.
I believe that it helps get rid of the stigma surrounding the psychological disorder. Because nowadays every people have their role model in the film industry or any industry. If will see that their role model is having a mental health issue then they will also get influenced by the words and start understanding the facts by them. The famous face has a great impact and influence over their fans. Thus, their move of sharing mental illness stories with their fans and with the public will influence the mind of the people and they will try to understand that it's not a problem. Mental health is equally important as physical health is.
I believe I will definitely talk about this and feel comfortable talking about my disorder with my friends and family. Because there is no shame in talking about your illness with your friends and family. There are the people who will understand you the most. I will also share my disorder with my colleagues at work. They have the right to know about me and I don’t think there is something wrong with this. Mental health is the same as your physical health. If a person gets physically unfit, he will talk to his friends and take advice from them. Thus, the same can happen in mental health too.
As a society, we should change our views of people with psychological disorders (Grob, 2019). We can educate ourselves and society about mental illness including substance use disorders. We can examine our judgemental thinking. We can talk carefully with the person you are suffering from mental illness. We can control our attitudes and behaviors and make them feel comfortable among us. We should talk about mental illness openly and try to help the one who needs your help.
As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads rapidly across the world, it is causing widespread panic, concern, and worry among large numbers of people (Cullen, Gulati, & Kelly, 2020). It has affected the mental health of mine as well. In this pandemic, no one can meet their friends and family. Some people are living all alone at their home. The youth and the older adults are the ones who suffered a lot during this pandemic. No one can meet anyone and the negative news all over the media and social media is making mentally unstable to everyone.
