The contemporary Korean Cinema known as hide and seek is a psychological thriller and the movie shows the murderous tendencies as well as the kleptomaniac tendencies of Joo He. She kills and takes the place of the residents and she also robs them of their property. The story also shows the dark past of Sung Soo and how he had usurped Sung Chul’s property to become rich when Sung Chul was the biological heir and he was adapted (Woo, 2014.). He used Sung Chul’s skin disease as a leverage to do so. This makes him guilty and always keeps him alert. All these characters seem to show the different aspects of human psychology and the different psychological problems that can happen to a person. Kleptomania is the recurrent affinity and addiction to steal different items that a person generally does not need and which might not have so much value. It is a rare but a serious mental health disorder which can cause emotional as well as social problems if not treated properly.
This story shows all the characters having a war with their inner selves and the analytical theory which can be used to determine that is Carl Jung’s theory of the Map of the soul. Carl Jung had broken the orthodox psychoanalytic approach to create a different theory of personality which is called the analytical psychology and it is based on the assumption that the spiritual phenomena can be an influence in the lives of people. He believed in the pagan approach of the gnostic people and he believed his psychological approach to be the gnostic psychological approach (Conran, 2018). The main aspect of the psychological approach by Jung is the aspects of the inner self and the journey to self-actualisation. The main aspect of Jungian psychology is the Jungian Archetypes and they have universal symbols as well as imageries across different cultures and they might show up in dreams , art or religion. The different Jungian Archetypes are namely, Self, Persona, Shadow, Ego, Anima and Animus. In this movie, the aspect of persona and shadow have been depicted by Sung Soo when he decided to hide his past. Sung Soo’s past and his denial became the shadow that keep on following him in this inner journey and make him guilty; his persona is of a successful and prosperous business man with a happy family. The aspect of persona is also shown by Joo Hee who enacts as a single mother in distress but it is not actually the case (Carducci, 2020).
Persona is the outer shell and the outer mask that people put up to be accepted in the society and the façade that they keep to be accepted in the society. The persona is the outward, external face that the individual represents to the world (Hietalahti, 2019).
The shadow is the reticent animalistic side of the individual such as the Id in Freudian psychology. It is the source of creative as well as the destructive powers of the person. This represents all the repressed desires and the wishes that a person has which might not be properly accepted in the society in its full form (Lawson, 2018).
Anima is the mirror image of the biological sex which is the female or the feminine or the masculine energy which lies in all the people. The unconscious feminine side to a male and the masculine side to a female. Each and every person manifests the behaviour and the attitudes of the other which is due to interaction between different people. The psyche of a woman has the masculine archetypes which are the animus and the psyche of the male has the feminine archetypes which is the anima (Colman, 2018).
In the final stage comes the self which gives a sense of coherence and unity to all the experiences. For Jung the main aim of human beings is to reach this state of self-actualisation or self-hood and just like Erickson , Jung is moving in the direction of a more spiritual and humanist orientation (Danylova, 2020).
Each and every part of the Jungian psychology relates to the development of the self and the achievement of the self. It is mainly concerned with the inner journey and the manifestations of this journey into the personality. If the stages of Shadow or ego not are fulfilled, then they can cause a problem in the overall formation of the self.
