The term monetization refers to the process with which something is made to make money or getting paid. It is one of the recently highlighted terms, and is often used in social media networking websites (Yarali, Joyce and Dixon 2020). Popular video social networking website YouTube, helps various channels in monetizing their videos. This means that, when the subscribed viewers or non-subscribed viewers are watching the videos uploaded by any channel, then YouTube pays money to the channel owner. This is mainly done through with the help of advertisements (Knoppers and Thorogood 2017). During the initial stage of monetized video, they contain advertisements within the video. Viewers are able to view the advertisement in the middle of the video.
Social Media platform is one of the leading industries when it comes to daily user count. Daily user counts means that, the number of people or user of social media technology, who uses the social media application or website daily (Dryer, Walia and Chattopadhyay 2018). Now, the revenue generated by the social media platform is through by broadcasting various types of advertisements to the users of the social media. These advertisements are mainly sponsored by the organization itself. They pay the social media platform in order to broadcast their advertisements to the social media platform. The advertisements are often integrated with the videos which are being uploaded by the users. As the number of views for the video increases a separate amount of money is given to the uploader too.
This monetization scheme or strategy is one of the primary sources for the social media platform to earn money (Siau and Wang 2020). As the social media platform contains a high number of daily users, due to which the social media platform broadcasts those advertisement to them. The social media platforms use artificial intelligence. They track those videos which has the highest number of views. Thus, as those videos are on a popular demand, they advertise in between those videos. After that, they receive the money from the advertising organization and gives a small portion of that amount to the video uploader.
During the early days of social media networking websites, monetization concept was not being used in the social media (Ienca et al. 2018). However, with the gaining popularity of the social media platform and the high number of daily users, these social media platforms have started using advertisement revenue and monetizing the videos. They are doing it in a two-way scheme, where they receive money from the advertisement agency and give a small portion of the money to the video uploader. Thus, it benefits both of them. However, in order to make the users use the products or services which is being advertised, the social media platform have started using artificial intelligence in order to track the data and information of the users (North, Richardson and North 2017). In order to broadcast relevant advertisement, the social media platform, keeps monitoring the kind of things or objects which the users like and shows them those kinds of relevant advertisement.
For example, if a user loves playing online games and watches various gameplays on the social media platform, those users will be shown the advertisement of various kinds of gaming consoles. As the artificial intelligence predicts that, there is a high chance that the user will buy that product. These tracking of user data and information leads to privacy and legal issues with the user and the social media platform. The artificial intelligence always monitors the movement of the user in order to predict the result, so that, it can display the appropriate advertisement to the user.
Ashurst is one of the leading law firm, which can help in providing legal or ethical advice. They will go through the various kinds of social media laws and regulation which has been mandated by the government. After that, they will review the operations and services of the social media networking organization. Once they are able to find various kinds of lapses present in the operations and services, it will warn their users about those flaws in the social media platform. This will make the social media platform to make the operational changes in order to comply with the rules and regulations mandated by the government of that country.
In order to make the report, we need to first go through the various laws and ethics we need to follow, while we are monetizing the videos which are being uploaded by the users of the social media platform. After that, we need to get some kind of evidence, where it will prove that the employee of the social media is using the illegal practices in order to gain the money which is being generated by the video (Williams and Anderson 2018). Once there is enough evidence in order to accuse the employee, all the evidence will need to be structured in a logical fashion. After that, the report along with the evidence attached will be sent to the higher authority, who handles these kinds of cases. Once the higher authority receives the report with the evidence, the employee will be evicted out or terminated from the organization.
Code of conduct is one of the important aspects which needs to adhered in any organization. As here we are discussing about a social media organization, the code of conduct needs to be stricter (Kalu et al. 2020). Social media platform always uses the personal data and information of the users in order to provide the various operations and services to their users. Code of conduct and ethics needs to be implied within the organization, so that, the employees working at the organization does not have their hands on the personal data and information of the users. These personal data and information of the users needs to be stored in the data centres and servers of the organization in such a manner that, no one, with the highest level of access permission will be able to view those data. Furthermore, when those data and information are stored in the servers it needs to be encrypted.
